Obituary
Paul Crutzen, the scientist who won the Nobel Prize for chemistry
for his work on the effect of chlorofluorocarbons on the ozone
layer, has passed away at age 87. Crutzen,
who was born in Amsterdam, began his
career at Stockholm University’s Dept.
for Meteorology and also taught at
Oxford University, the National Center
for Atmospheric Research in Boulder,
CO, the University of Chicago and the
University of California. He eventually

became Director of Atmospheric
Chemistry at the Max Planck Institute
for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany from
1980–2000. He was awarded the Nobel
Prize in 1995 together with U.S. chemist
F. Sherwood Rowland and Mexican chemist Mario Molina.
Crutzen also coined the term “Anthropocene” era to describe the
profound effects of humans on the environment in the past three
centuries.

Technology. Jeena James has been named Director of Marketing.
Keith Heery has been promoted to Operations Director, having been
with the company since 1996. John Neely was named National Sales
Manager. Melanie Widener has been appointed Creative Director after
serving as Senior Evaluator; she has also been with the company
since 1996.
Effective March 31, Heinrich Schaper, Symrise Executive Board
Member and head of the Flavor segment, will retire. The Board
has approved the merger of the Flavor & Nutrition businesses,
which will be led by Board Member Jean-Yves Parisot starting
April 1. Parisot has overseen Symrise’s Nutrition segment since
2014, and held previous roles with Air Liquide, Danisco, Rhodia
and Pfizer. Board Member Achim Daub, who has headed the
Scent & Care segment since 2005, will leave the company on
March 31.
MANE has appointed Loïc Bleuez as Fine Fragrance EMEA Innovation
& Development Director. He began his career at MANE and rejoined
the company in Levallois-Perret, France in September. Bleuez
most recently served as Global R&D Director Fragrance Creation
for Sensient Fragrances, and prior, worked for Coty Inc. Spray
James Heery Neely Widener
