Newly-launched emu (everyone must use) hand sanitizer is promoted
as a product that “feels good, smells good and does good.”
The spray products contain 62% ethyl alcohol and come in two
sizes: 5.5oz. (340 uses per can) and 2.2oz. (140 uses per can and
Transportation Security Administration TSA-approved). The refreshing,
nature-inspired fragrances of Lemongrass, Watermelon,
Ocean Surf and Orange Blossom help eliminate any unpleasant
alcohol smell while moisturizing hands with aloe and vitamin E.
Emu’s antibacterial formula adheres to U.S. Food & Drug
Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
(CDC) guidelines. Additionally, 5% of net proceeds are
donated to the Foundation for the National Institute of Health
to help fund COVID-19 vaccine research and development, as well
as better prepare against future pandemics. Made in the U.S., emu

“COVID-19 had a positive impact in 2020 with the
extremely high demand for disinfectant sprays and hand
sanitizers,” noted Strickland. “This trend is expected to
continue in 2021 until a cure is found.”
Warren Bennett, VP Sales, Shield Packaging Co.,
Dudley, MA, explained, “Due to the COVID-19 virus
situation, we have been focusing on keeping the plant
cleaner and isolating employees from one another wherever
possible, in the production process and in the office.
The effort has been successful and we will continue to
focus and improve on that situation as necessary.”
The Mother of Invention
Hand sanitizers in aerosol packaging were pretty boring fare in
2019, but the current health crisis changed all that. In 2020, filler
Reabrook Ltd., Swadlincote, UK partnered with Ball Aerosol
Packaging Devizes (UK) and the LINDAL Group to design,
produce and fill 25,000 cans
of Rainbow hand sanitizer
for the companies’ local communities.
The product, which
is effective against all enveloped
viruses, was packaged
using Ball Corp.’s aluminum
aerosol cans, which accommodate
LINDAL’s valve and
actuator technology, and then
filled on one of Reabrook’s
high-speed filling lines and
safety checked with leak detection
and pressure testing to
ensure safety for consumers.
The hand sanitizer was split
equally between the three
companies and then donated
within local communities
to hospitals, care homes,
schools, charities, emergency services and other good causes.
Stockholm-based product development firm Lipidor partnered
with filler Aurena Laboratories AB, Karlstadt, Sweden, to produce
Lipidor’s patented and
novel aerosol disinfectant
for hands—Skin Disinfection
Spray. As part of this
initiative, 10,000 cans were
donated to areas of China
hard hit by the COVID-19
virus. Aurena Labs offers
the hand spray in 50- and
100mL sizes to customers for
their brands in Europe and
certain markets in Asia. The
disinfectant spray is based
on Lipidor’s alcohol-based
AKVANO technology. It effectively
kills viruses, bacteria
and fungi as well as moisturizes
and softens the skin. It has
passed tests in accordance
with European standards EN
In 2020, Shield Packaging of California (Plaze, Inc.), Chino,
CA, made donations of Claire brand Spray Disinfectant Q to
Isaiah’s Rock Food Bank, also located in Chino, as well as the
City of Chino Community Services Dept., which caters to the
elderly and house-bound with food and prepared meals.
“The donation that we thought the most appropriate and
most sought after is the Claire brand aerosol disinfectant,”
noted Roger Vanderlaan, VP/GM of Shield Packaging of CA.
“There were approximately 600–800 people who came
through the food bank—some hugged their can of disinfectant.
They were very appreciative,” observed Vanderlaan.
