HCPA Annual Meeting
meets virtually…
The Household & Commercial Products Association
(HCPA) XPAND2020 Annual Meeting was held virtually
Dec. 7–11.
During the General Session, political journalist Amy Walter provided
a post-election analysis and insight on what to expect from
both the Biden administration and Congress in the year ahead.
During the Special Retail Engagement Session, representatives
from Costco, Scivera and Smarter Sorting discussed how retailers
18 Spray March 2021
can effectively implement their
chemical management policies
to help protect the health and
safety of consumers and the environment
by encouraging the
development of products and processes that are safer, healthier
and more sustainable.
Alexandra Dunn, Assistant Administrator at the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), addressed the Federal Advisory
Council for the second consecutive year, highlighting the work
the HCPA did related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
APD Meeting
During the Aerosol Products Division (ADP) meeting, Svetlana
Uduslivaia, Head of Research, Euromonitor International,
presented COVID-19 & Beyond: Consumer Shifts & Opportunities in
the Home Care Industry. During the COVID-19 pandemic surge of
2020, Home Care was perceived as essential to at-home care and
preventative health and accordingly saw growth. Post-COVID-19,
the industry will have long-term opportunities for organic growth,
mainly in the developing markets.
Industry players will need to rethink strategies and move to
strengthen digital capabilities as well as revamp value propositions
for consumers to focus on consumer education beyond the
pandemic.
Additionally, sustainability will take on broader, more multidimensional
meanings, considering both the environment and
society. Consumer education will remain high on the agenda for
brands pursuing sustainability, Uduslivaia said.
Caroline Taylor, Director of R&D and Lise Laurin, CEO
of Earthshift Global presented Function in Context: How Not to
Kick the Aerosol Can Down the (Environmental) Road. A Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) is a scientific method to analyze the environmental
impacts associated with the life cycle of a product.
This is also sometimes called “life cycle analysis.” LCA is part
of a larger tool kit to assess environmental impact, which also
includes Environmental Risk Assessment, Sustainability Return
on Investment and Circularity Analysis. LCA is used to evaluate
relative performance of alternatives, understand trade-offs and
identify hot-spots.
To jump on the “circularity bandwagon,” Laurin and Taylor
noted the aerosol industry can consider using as much recycled
content as possible in production, as well as consider models for
reuse. In order to increase the availability of recycled content,
industry could consider providing recycling information (or a
link) on all cans, consider take-back programs, create education
campaigns for waste processors and consumers, as well as evaluate
potential impacts of options early in the design cycle.
Nicole Quiñonez of Madden Quiñonez Advocacy presented
California Updates. A revised version of this presentation will
appear in the April 2021 issue of SPRAY.
Michelle Gothard and Mark Nicmanis of Triple Line Tech
presented Foam with Compressed Gas Propellants. For more on
this technology, see p.28.
