Unilever announced it will eliminate the word “normal” from all of its beauty and personal care brands’
packaging and advertising as part of the launch of its new “Positive Beauty” vision and strategy. Positive
Beauty, which sets out several progressive commitments and actions for brands such as Dove, Lifebuoy, Axe
and Sunsilk, aims to champion a new era of beauty that is equitable and inclusive, as well as sustainable
for the planet. Positive Beauty will also help to drive a transformation of how its products are designed and
formulated to do more good for both people and the planet, deliver an enhanced product experience and tap
into consumer trends.
A 10,000-person study, which was commissioned by Unilever and conducted across nine countries, found
that 56% think the beauty and personal care industry can make people feel excluded. Consumers want to
see the beauty and personal care industry focus more on making people feel better, rather than just looking
better (74%). Fifty-two percent indicated they now pay more attention to a company’s stance on societal
issues before buying products. Seven in ten people agreed that using the word “normal” on product packaging
and advertising has a negative impact. For younger people—those aged 18–35—this rises to eight in ten.
The 2021 American Cleaning Institute (ACI) Virtual Summit Duck Fashion Show raised $23,000 to support Clean the
World Foundation’s efforts to provide hygiene products to families in need around the world. This year, 16 companies purchased a
corporate duck to compete in the first ever Virtual Duck Fashion Show. The submissions were exceptionally fun and creative, said ACI, and
although there were many favorites, there can only be one winner. That title went to “Stan E. Tizer, M.D.” submitted by Arylessence.
“ACI, our member companies and Shell Chemical LP…are proud to highlight and support the mission and efforts of Clean the World,
especially while we are still battling the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Melissa Hockstad, ACI President & CEO.
“We’re not done yet; we know that as long as this virus remains, it poses a threat to humanity,” noted Sam Stephens, Executive Director,
Clean the World Foundation.
“We’re committed to doing everything we can to slow and stop the spread and...thanks to this generous support, we’ll be able to serve
tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands more people—those that are most at risk around the world. We are incredibly grateful.”

Lockdowns and social distancing have triggered a dramatic
decline in deodorant usage as, according to Mintel research,
28% deodorant/antiperspirant users have applied it less
frequently since the COVID-19 outbreak. Frequency of usage
has fallen most dramatically among Gen Z (aged 23 and
under) and Millennial (aged 24–39) consumers. Just under
half (45%) of Gen Zs and 40% of
Millennials are using deodorant/
antiperspirant less frequently, as the
trend towards casualization extends
from clothing to personal hygiene.
