outdoor experiences to lift sales in the near term and increase the category
potential for the longer term. Featuring protection beyond the sun, such as
blue light and pollution protection, may help boost sunscreen usage and
grow sales, Mintel said.
Market research firm Kline & Co.’s recently published Cosmetics &
Toiletries USA database noted that retail sales of sun care products in the
U.S.—encompassing sunscreens, sunless tanning and after-sun products—
dropped 6.4% to $1.901 billion in 2020 from the year prior. While this
was considered a moderate drop, Sun Care had the steepest decline in
the Skin Care product class, which includes facial skin care and hand and
body products. The category was challenged by the decline in demand for
SPF due to reduced travel and consumers putting off vacation plans during
the COVID-19 pandemic. Sunless tanning products observed strong
gains as a result, however.
Naturally-positioned and professional skin care brands also outperformed
the category and helped offset further declines as products with
clean and reef-safe ingredients, anti-aging properties and protection against
blue light and pollution maintained momentum.
Pre-pandemic, the category had averaged a 4.1% sales increase annually
from 2015–2019 and Kline predicts sun care will register minimal
growth in 2021, then return to pre-2020 performance levels in 2022.
