International, U.S. sales of Adult Sun Care aerosol
sprays in 2020 came in at 23.6 million units;
Adult Sun Care products in spray pumps sold 41
million units.
Globally, sales of Adult Sun Care aerosol
sprays in 2020 comprised 55.6 million units; Adult Sun Care products
in spray pumps sold 140.6 million units globally.
The U.S. skin protection market exceeded an estimated $1.3
billion in 2020 retail sales, a decline of 7.5% from 2019, according
14 Spray May 2021
to the report Skin Protection: Including the Impact of COVID-19 from
market research firm Mintel. The drop in sales is largely attributed
to the COVID-19 outbreak, as some consumers felt less obligated
to wear sunscreen while isolated at home. Limited vacations and
closures of public pools and beaches also eroded sales, as 26% of
consumers only use sunscreen on an as-needed basis, such as during
a beach vacation or special occasion.
Less-frequent usage of products leads to longer purchase cycles,
which caused the skin protection market to take a hit in 2020.
Mintel believes that sunscreen brands need to focus on everyday
