SC Johnson is continuing to address the plastic waste crisis
by expanding and widening access to its concentrate offerings.
The new line of SC Johnson concentrates began rolling out
in the U.S. and Canada in May, with Scrubbing Bubbles,
Windex and fantastik bottles and two-count refills set to hit
Amazon, Target, Walmart and other e-commerce retailers
first. The next wave of concentrate refills—including Scrubbing
Bubbles, Windex and Mr. Muscle—will be available for
purchase online in Mexico this July, and in the UK starting
in August. China and Japan will follow in September. Beyond ease of use, the benefits of concentrate refills are primarily environmental, said
SC Johnson. Trigger bottles, for example, deliver more than 10,000 sprays and can be refilled dozens of times. By purchasing bottles with such a
long lifespan, millions of pounds of plastic waste are stopped from ending up in landfills.
This follows SC Johnson’s decision to use 100% recycled ocean plastic for its Windex Vinegar Ocean Plastic bottles that are sourced from
Plastic Bank from areas such as Haiti, the Philippines and Indonesia. The cleanser, housed in a 680mL spray bottle, is currently available at
North American retailers.
Five Southeast Asian countries—China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand—accounted for up to 60% of the plastic waste leaking
into the ocean, according to a 2015 report by the Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business & Environment. To
help address this, SC Johnson has partnered with Plastic Bank and opened nine collection centers in Indonesia with plans for expansion.
Dubai e-waste specialist Enviroserve has opened The Recycling Hub, one of the
world’s largest e-waste recycling facilities, at a total cost of Dh120 million ($32.68 million).
Located at Dubai Industrial Park, the 280,000 square-foot e-waste recycling plant
will process waste, electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), information technology
asset disposition (ITAD), refrigerant gas and specialized waste such as aerosol cans, light
bulbs and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) products. The facility can process
the entire range of WEEE from consumer and industrial to commercial and military.
These include air conditioners, batteries, computers, household appliances, mobile
phones and military avionics. It is currently the only dedicated refrigerant gas reclaim
facility in the UAE, according to the company. The project is backed by the Swiss
Government Export Finance Agency and represents one of the largest foreign direct
investments in the field of environmental management to date in the UAE. Enviroserve’s
green recycling facility will service international e-waste recycling efforts across
Africa, the Middle East and Caucasus.
