Online retailer Amazon.com is building a separate warehouse in Mississippi
intended specifically for hazardous goods it stores and ships to
customers, including bear spray, bleach cleaner, nail polish and more.
The warehouse is smaller than a typical fulfillment center at 500,000
square feet, and will house the most hazardous items that Amazon
ships and features and an updated sprinkler system and staff training.
The decision follows an incident in December when a can of bear
spray fell off a shelf at Amazon’s fulfillment center in Robbinsville, NJ
and released fumes that injured 54 workers.
Amazon also recently announced a new fee for items it considers
“dangerous,” such as aerosol cans and lithium-ion batteries that sellers
send to Amazon warehouses. The fees are higher than the regular fees
Amazon charges for using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).
The State of Washington passed a climate bill, HB 1112, to restrict
certain uses of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), mostly for refrigeration.
HB 1112 adopts as state law the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency’s (EPA) Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Rules 20
and 21, which determine what chemicals can be used to replace ozonedepleting
substances (ODS) for specific end uses. The legislature is
also contemplating additional future restrictions. Section 8 of HB
1112 requires the Dept. of Ecology to complete a report by Dec. 1,
2020 that addresses “how to increase the use of refrigerants with a low
global warming potential in mobile sources, utility equipment, and
consumer appliances, and how to reduce other uses of hydrofluorocarbons
in the State of Washington.”
