New Ingredients for Sun Care Ashland Ashland’s anhydrous HydroSheer Dry Technology Spray is clear upon application to wet skin. The SPF 50 demonstration sunscreen spray product formulated for the EU provides a non-greasy, light, dry finish on skin. There are an additional seven formulations available for demonstration offering functions such as skin brightening, hydration, firming and cleansing in delivery systems with textures that range from smooth creams, to soft butter, to the silky, smooth finish of gel creams. Covestro Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience) launched the ethanol-based polyurethane film-former Baycusan C 2000. According to the company, a small amount of this raw material added to sunscreen formulations significantly increases the sun protection factor in in vivo tests, meaning it has an SPF-boosting effect. Its high waterproof properties are maintained even after repeated dips in the water. The formulations absorb quickly and can be applied on wet skin. Baycusan C 2000 can be incorporated into aerosol sprays, sunscreen gels and oils, and is compatible with common UV protection agents. Manufacturers save time because they do not have to heat or neutralize products. Givaudan Based on micro-emulsion technology, Vegetan Gold from Givaudan is a 100% oil soluble 1,3-Dihydroxypropanone (DHA) that helps enable the development of new types of self-tanning oils for cosmetic brands. The bronzing effect of Vegetan Gold is the biochemical result of the 22 Spray May 2016 immediate and spontaneous coloration of the epidermis via the formation of brown polymers called melanoidins, resulting in a smooth and natural tanning effect. The intensity of the self-tanning of Vegetan Gold reaches its maximum within only 24 hours after its first application. The tan stays optimum for 48 hours and fades away with the natural exfoliation of the skin. It has been crafted to offer formulators the possibility of easily designing distinctive crystal transparent oil formulas. China compliant, this active ingredient is fully compatible with sun filters and other oil-soluble active ingredients. Lubrizol Corp. Lubrizol launched Avalure Flex-6 Polymer, a new multibenefit solution for the skin care market. It offers more uniform coverage, protection and water resistance in sun care and daily skin care products, as well as better hiding power and wear in make-up. Functions include emulsion stabilization, pigment dispersion, film formation and rheology modification without compromising the sensory quality of the product. Key benefits include consistent thickening efficiency across a wide pH range (pH 3-10) and in the presence of some electrolytes, offering the possibility of developing high performance commercial products; compatibility with high levels of metal oxide pigments, enabling O/W challenging formulations in sun care, daily skin care, color cosmetic and baby care; soft, powdery after-feel; and efficient film formation at low use level (1 wt%), allowing for more uniform coverage. In sun protection products, it helps to spread UV filters more evenly on the skin and to cover them under a layer of polymer film, resulting in enhanced water-resistance and improved sun protection with a matte, soft and non-greasy after-feel. Its hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), independent emulsification properties (including silicone oils), multi-functionality and ease-of-use (easyto disperse and cold processable), help enable savings through simplification of formulation (fewer ingredients needed) and manufacturing processes.
