The global over-the-counter drugs market was valued at
$303.51 billion in 2018, according to market research company
Mordor Intelligence, and it is estimated to be valued
at $491.02 billion in 2024, witnessing a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of 8.5%. The growth-propelling factors of
this market are product innovations, high penetration in the
emerging market, favorable regulatory framework and an inclination
of pharmaceutical companies toward O-T-C drugs from
prescription drugs. This report, however, does not separate
topical O-T-C products from oral O-T-C products.
The global O-T-C market is likely to record the highest
growth rate in the emerging markets of Latin America and
Southeast Asia over the coming years. This can be attributed
to a rapidly growing population, coupled with a growing middle
class in these regions and an increase in disposable income
of the population, which will add critical mass to the population
available to access O-T-C medications. New channels of
accessibility in emerging markets—such as retail outlets and
supermarkets—are also contributing to the growth of the O-T-C
market in the emerging economies, said Mordor Intelligence.
North America currently dominates the market for O-T-C
products and is expected to continue its stronghold for a few
more years. The region is expected to increase its market share
in the future, owing to the leading trend among pharmaceutical
companies to switch from prescription to O-T-C remedies.
Mordor Intelligence further reported that National Institute
of Health has stated that 93% of adults in the U.S. prefer to
treat their minor ailments with O-T-C medicines before seeking
professional care, and 85% of parents in the U.S. prefer to
treat their children’s minor ailments with an O-T-C medicine
before seeking professional care. This is resulting in the formation
of a larger O-T-C market.
Unlike most of the large, traditional O-T-C players, small,
independent O-T-C companies have recently recorded doubledigit
sales growth, according to market research firm Kline &
Co. These companies often outpace market growth by offering
unique brands, uncommon and often natural ingredients,
focused distribution and a strong online presence, frequently
combined with compelling digital marketing that resonates
with today’s O-T-C consumers. Identifying these market disruptors
and learning the factors that make them resonate with
consumers and retailers is crucial for
marketers and suppliers.
