He also thanked the HCPA Air Quality Council for its work
with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on the new
volatile organic compound (VOC) limits for consumer products.
The HCPA Preservation Stewardship Task Force was praised for
its battle against the spread of misinformation, especially chemophobia;
Caldeira invited attendees to the meeting’s inaugural
Preservation Summit, likening it to the 2018 Air Care Reputation
Task Force Summit.
Also new to the 2019 Annual Meeting was the Ingredient Innovation
Forum—a special B2B opportunity created to connect
suppliers, formulators and marketers.
Aerosol Products
Division program
The Aerosol Products Division (APD)
convened with opening remarks from APD
Chair Jed Seay of The Chemours Co.
He was followed by Daniel Garbark,
Principal Research Scientist, Battelle Memorial
Institute with This is Battelle: Solving
What Matters Most. The Battelle Memorial
Institute is a nonprofit,
charitable trust formed
in 1925 whose mission is to translate scientific
discovery and technological advances
into societal benefits via philanthropy,
R&D and science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM) education.
Garbark explained the numerous areas
of Battelle research—health; neurotechnology;
chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive
(CBRNE) defense; national security; environment and infrastructure;
medical device technology—but focused, for the benefit of
the APD program, on soybeans as chemical building-blocks for
bio-based lubricants, bio-based surfactant technology and soybased
surfactants.
Soy-based lubricants compete with conventional
petroleum lubricants and address
primary deficiencies of other bio-based
options. Bio-based surfactant technology
offers derivatives of vegetable oil and fatty
acids and introduces chemical functionality,
which provides control of surfactant
properties. Soy-based surfactants have
applications in laundry and industrial &
institutional cleaners.
CAPCO Chairman Sean Fitzgerald of
Cobra Plastics presented Promoting Aerosol Products: Make More
Magic, CAPCO & the Mist:Understood Campaign. Make More
Magic is a division of the Consumer Aerosol Products Council
(CAPCO), a non-profit organization committed to supporting
the aerosol products industry, improving consumers’ perception
of aerosol products and increasing purchase intent and usage
across the U.S.
Mist:Understood is the first activation under the Make More
Magic division, aimed at bringing positive aerosol messaging to
the places most meaningful to young people—their local communities
and their digital devices—through which they explore the
world. Mist:Understood is focused on a sub-segment of today’s
Millennials because of their buying power and digital influence.
