Hair Mousse & Hairspray: +3.8% filling
volume in 2019
This increase is linked to a transfer of production
to France in 2018. That operation stabilized
in 2019 and showed a limited increase compared
to the almost 21% increase in 2018 over
2017.
Shaving Foams & Shaving Gels: +1.3% filling
volume in 2019
This segment is growing moderately in a mature
market. New “Hipster” fashion trends favor
beard care over shaving foams and gels, said
CFA.
Sun Care, Water Sprays, Dry Shampoos,
Other: -8.3% filling volume in 2019
Production of these subcategories keeps decreasing
(-4 % in 2018). They are meeting strong competition
from brand owners producing abroad.
Globally, these subcategories are variable and
linked to weather or fashion.
Household Care
Household Care saw a decrease of 4.1% for a
total volume of almost 70 million units filled
in 2019.
Air Fresheners: -40.6% filling volume in 2019
Major international brand owners that are not producing in
France battled markets last year and this, in addition to negative
media attention focused on air fresheners in general, can explain
the decrease, said CFA.
Insecticides/Horticultural: No change in filling volume in 2019
With a total filling of 27.6 million units in 2019 for both export
and use in France, there was no variation from 2018. It is important
to note that French regulations on biocides implemented in
2019 tended to reduce production for the French market, said the
CFA. Another factor impacting sales was the weather’s effect on
insects such as mosquitoes and hornets.
Others (textiles, carpets, polishes, shoe care, oven cleaners,
kitchen cleaners): +1,900% filling volume in 2019
Twelve million units were filled in 2019 compared to 600,000 in
2018. Traditionally, there is a slow rotation of these products, but
the increase may be due to specialized filling for export rather than
for the domestic market.
Miscellaneous
There was an increase of 4.1% for a total volume filled of 186 million
units in 2019.
Cars & Motorcycles, Paints & Varnishes,
Industrial & Technical: No change in filling volume in 2019
This subcategory remains stable, temporarily pausing the continuous
growth that began in 2015.
Pharmacy & Veterinary: +8.7% filling volume in 2019
This subcategory was and is impacted by the evolution of diseases
and viruses
Food & Others: +8.2% filling volume in 2019
The CFA noted that there has been new growth in this subcategory.
Outlook 2020
The CFA believes that 2020 will be an exceptional year due to
the worldwide health crisis brought about by the COVID-19
pandemic. Global fillings will probably decline in 2020 (compared
to 2019)—especially for Industrial & Technical and Personal Care
products—because of consumer slowdown during lockdown.
However, the French aerosol industry will be remembered as
reactive and dynamic in adapting production for sanitary/health
care products, according to CFA. Many production lines have
been adapted to produce what the community has been requesting
to fight COVID-19. An increase in the sanitary/health care
segment is expected in 2020. Spray
