An extraordinary year…
This year has been an extraordinary one, to say the least. In our lifetime, we have
never before had to experience a national emergency from a pandemic. Our nation
and the world have changed dramatically in just a few months. It may take
a year or so to get back to a “new” normal. The events that led to the general shutdown
happened very quickly and we all had to adjust to a new way of handling business and
accommodating workers while still maintaining production. The aerosol industry has
continued to lend a helping hand during these difficult times.
As we now settle into a semblance of order, we continue to be met with new challenges,
making it difficult to plan. One such challenge is the uncertainty of when airlines and
other transportation networks will resume regular and safe travel schedules. Considering
this, the Southern Aerosol Technical Association (SATA) has decided to postpone its
Fall Meeting until Sept. 14–16, 2021 at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, FL. We
were uncertain how many members would be able to travel this autumn. This was an
extremely hard decision for our Board. This year, 2020, marks our 40th anniversary and
we were planning to celebrate with all of you; we truly do miss getting together with our
members.
As you know, SATA is a participant in the Aerosol Summit in Nashville, TN, which
was also postponed until next year—March 21–23, 2021. Based on the current available
information, we believe this may be the next chance the industry will be able to meet as
a group. Most of the remaining regional aerosol groups are postponing or rescheduling
events, as well. Even the Federation of European Aerosols (FEA) and the British Aerosol
Manufacturers Association (BAMA) have both rescheduled their 2020 events, confirming
this is truly a worldwide issue.
Just know that SATA is still working on your behalf to follow technical and regulatory
issues that affect your business. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is winding
down its work on amendments to its consumer volatile organic compound (VOC)
rule. Hair Care, Personal Fragrances, Air Fresheners and Crawling Bug Insecticides are
product categories that may have reduced VOC limits. Work on the sunsetting of the
fragrance exemption and expanding label claims to websites will affect most aerosol
manufacturers so please, stay involved. Other issues include State hydrofluorocarbon
(HFC) regulations that could affect the use of HFC134a, but could have extenuating
consequences, such as labeling.
SATA is the premier regional association dealing with technical issues. If your company
has any technical issues, feel free to contact us through our website (southernaerosol.
com) and we will work to get you an answer. In addition to technical issues, SATA also
provides an Aerosol 101 every other year. We coordinate with the Eastern Aerosol Association
(EAA) on this event to provide guidance to all industry newcomers, as well as
provide a refresher course to experienced people in the industry.
SATA looks forward to your participation in our meetings. If you have never been to
a SATA function, come on down. The venues are great, people are welcoming, topics are
interesting and important—and the beautiful weather is a plus. Who knows? You may
learn something while networking with wonderful people.
In closing, we wish all of you good health and a prosperous rest of the year. Looking
forward to seeing you all in 2021! If you need anything, do not hesitate to contact us
through our Board members or our website.
Stay healthy! We’ll get through this together!
On behalf of the SATA organization,
Doug Raymond
