EAA paves the way...
The September issue of SPRAY is loaded down with information across
the aerosol spectrum. From what’s going on in Canada, Mexico, Japan
and Argentina, to lubricants and peanut butter-flavored whipped
cream to can corrosion, plant expansions, patents and golf, it’s all in here this
month.
One feature of particular interest covers the new aerosol can races sponsored
by Church & Dwight at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, NJ. The aerosol
can mascots race each other between innings at minor league baseball games to
be the first to the recycling bin. The mascots sport the look of popular Church
& Dwight aerosol products and have two goals in mind: to encourage recycling
and to remind stadium fans that aerosol cans are, in fact, also recyclable.
The mascot costumes are really bright and beautiful (see p. 22), and longtime
readers will remember that this is not the first time we’ve seen aerosol
cans take the bases at minor league games. The Eastern Aerosol Association
(EAA) was the first organization to develop the concept of can races more than
10 years ago. The cans were and remain generic—sunscreen, insect repellent,
shave cream, hair spray—but the message is the same: aerosol products are helpful,
beneficial products that are completely recyclable. The positive message
was so popular that the Midwest Aerosol Association (MAA) and the Southern
Aerosol Technical Association (SATA) joined in, and even the Alliance for
Consumer Education (ACE) adopted the cans for a while, taking them to minor
league baseball stadiums around the U.S. to explain to kids and parents—
in a non-frightening way—the significant dangers of inhalation abuse.
So thanks to Church & Dwight for the fabulous promotion and thanks to
the EAA for dreaming it up all those years ago.
Speaking of the EAA, check out its annual golf outing in this issue—but
don’t think it’s all fun and games, golf and baseball with the EAA, as the
Board got down to business and elected four new members this year (see full
coverage on p. 36).
ADF & PCD are here!
