Henkel has officially inaugurated its first beauty care
laboratory in the Middle East. The new facility provides
state-of-the-art technology to innovate and test beauty
care products tailored specifically for Middle Eastern consumers.
The new laboratory is the second Henkel lab in
Dubai; the first one opened in 2013 for the Laundry &
Home Care Business Unit. The facility is the latest addition
to the global network of 22 major R&D centers.

According to market research firm Euromonitor International,
essential toiletries continue to dominate volumes of beauty and
personal care packaging, led by bath and shower, hair care and
oral care. As lifestyles continue to accelerate, consumers are looking
for ways to save time, valuing products with more functional
packaging and convenient closures, such as aerosol sprays, lotion
pumps or basic screw closures. Small package sizes have become
increasingly popular; and while smaller formats offer more portability
to nomadic consumers, they also allow consumers to discover
a wider range of products that become affordable thanks
to their lower unit prices. Consumers are also increasingly aware
of the impact that packaging has on the environment. As a
result, brand owners and packaging manufacturers are working
towards Greener packaging solutions, offering bioplastic, postconsumer
recycled packaging and lightweight packaging, among
others.
Continuing with its approach of sourcing its key raw materials
sustainably, Symrise has successfully obtained The Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC) Chain of Custody (CoC) certification for
ingredients derived from forest products. The FSC eco-credential
considers environmental and social responsibility for users of fragrances
and flavors derived from the forest. It promotes responsible
management of the world’s forests based on precise principles
and standards. Working closely with FSC, Symrise spent
almost a year to build a framework upon which consumers can
feel confident they are using fragrances and flavors derived from
sustainable sources, said the company.

campaigns to boost
recycling of metal
packaging after seven
new recently launched
campaigns.
The MetalMatters
program is funded by
a partnership of metal
packaging manufacturers,
fillers and reprocessors,
industry organizations and compliance schemes, and is managed
by Alupro. It launched in 2012 and, following the recent campaigns,
has reached 5.3 million households throughout the UK. The new campaigns
include two phases of leaflets informing householders about how
and what metal items can be recycled, as well as other communications
materials including recycling bin stickers, public transport posters and
cinema ads. Compliance provider Ecosurety, compliance scheme Valpak
and retailer Marks & Spencer have all recently partnered with
the program on specific campaigns
Residents of Orkney Council were informed that aerosols and foils
have been added to curbside collections for the first time, with the
council stating that it hopes “the combination of information, education
and reinforcement of the campaign messages will prove to be a positive
method of boosting recycling rates.”
