Madrid for the 28th FEA International Aerosol Congress & 17th Exhibition. The threeday event proved to be an excellent opportunity to catch up with past friends and develop new contacts. Indeed, one visitor to our booth described the event as a “big family reunion.” In addition to the large contingent of exhibitors and the continual line-up of presentations on aerosol marketing, technology and regulatory issues, there was always something going on the show floor, such as an aerosol haute cuisine demonstration (see p. 54) and several aerosol art-in-progress performances. More on all that went on at the Aerosol Congress & Exhibition in next month’s issue, and in future issues. And practice your Turkish, because the 29th FEA International Aerosol Congress & 18th Exhibition will be held in Istanbul on October 4-6, 2016. Visit www.aerosolistanbul.org for further details. Our Soul is a Spray Can…or Bon Jour Dalai Lama! Aerosol Art is indeed a hot topic and one that the aerosol industry seems to sometimes shy away from. Aerosol street art is most often associated with graffiti…which is associated with vandalism, property destruction, paint can theft and disenfranchised youth. However, there is a huge, legitimate segment of artists out there who favor this medium as their preferred form of self expression. They are not tagging or defacing, but using industry’s products to produce beautiful, recognized works of art (see p. 54 yet again). Like any other artist, street artists hate to be stifled. This was so very apparent in the above piece of aerosol art by “Nicolas P.” I photographed this wall in Portugal last month, where I spent a few days after the Aerosol Congress. The message of “Our Soul is a Spray Can” struck me as being an expression of pride in his medium, but also as a plea for us to take his work seriously, and not treat it as graffiti. I love everything about this painting: the beach, the palm tree, the gingerbread man with the glowing blue spray-painted soul and the message in the bottom right corner that exclaims “Bon Jour Dalai Lama!” I could stare at it for hours. Given the choice between this and a dirty white wall, I’ll take an intriguing painting any day. Industry needs to distinguish between true art and vandalism, and support a genuine medium that supports the industry. Editor Ava Caridad, Editor
