The Power to Act Effectively... WAIB meets in Napa T   he Western Aerosol Information 26 Spray November 2013 Bureau (WAIB) held its 41st annual conference in Napa, CA on Sept. 8-10. The theme focused on Leverage—The Power to Act Effectively. Greg Johnson of Sherwin Williams served as Master of Ceremonies. Pete Fougner, Region Director, Sales at WD- 40 Co. asked What is Leverage? He defined it as “the use of credit to enhance one’s speculative capacity; the action of a lever or the mechanical advantage gained by it; and power, effectiveness, trying to gain more political leverage.” How can you use leverage to further your career and/or help your business? Simply put, leverage is doing more and more with less and less or strategically achieving more by using resources for their maximum benefit. To use leverage successfully in business, one needs to learn how to use the leverage of Time (yours and that of other people); Resources; Technology; Relationships; Money/Wealth; and Position/Opportunity. Nida Ansari of MWV presented Leverage + Innovation. How does a packaging company manage innovation? By having an oversight on timeline; a faster “handoffs” across functions; integration of organization; and better documentation. One must look at the bigger picture: What have we tried? Should we try again? It’s important to remember that framework must have flexibility. What are the results? A reduction in time to market by cutting down on development time without sacrificing quality and continuing to meet the needs of the market. It’s important to learn from the point of improvement, pain of progress, success and failure, power of change and power of process. Dwight Morgan, The Composites Group, presented Managing in the Information Age: When History Does Not Repeat Itself. We live in a period of rapid technological Fougner Ansari
