Take a Break...March/April 2021
Where's Wanda & Why Isn't She Wet?
A family of seven is on a camping trip in Montana. Every
night the parents—Mary & Gary—take a headcount to make
sure all five kids—Aaron, Karen, Wanda, Lawrence and Florence—
are safe in their tents. They do the same in the morning.
One morning, the family wakes to find that middle child
Wanda is not in her tent—she’s gone! Everyone panics and
starts calling her name. They check the woods, they check all
of the tents, they check the fire-pit and latrine, but Wanda is
nowhere to be found.
Finally, Karen sees Wanda on the other side of the river. The
family calls and waves their arms, imploring Wanda to come
back to the safety of the camp. Wanda begins to cross the river,
and as she does so, her family screams with terror, but Wanda
keeps going until she gets to the other side and joins her family
at their campsite.
Wanda is not wet. She did not use a fallen log, stepping stones,
a boat or a bridge.
Why is Wanda dry?

from our January/February 2021 issue
The name for the month of January is derived from Janus. The ancient God of beginnings and transitions
in Roman mythology, who presided over the gate to the New Year. Janus is symbolized by an image of a
face that looks forwards and backwards at the same time—casting out the old and welcoming in the new.
