Henkel recently held ribbon cutting ceremonies at two new research and development
facilities in Trumbull, CT and Stamford, CT. In Stamford, the
24,000-square-foot facility employs about 40 people. It comprises a formulation
lab, which develops Henkel Beauty Care products including Dial, Right Guard,
Tone, Schwarzkopf and got2b, as well as Research@Elm, a clinical testing lab.
Trumbull’s state-of-the-art expanded facility spans 27,000 square feet and includes
formulation laboratories, a consumer product and fragrance evaluation center,
packaging design and two pilot plants that support production scale-up capabilities
for the company’s Beauty Care and Laundry & Home Care divisions.

In honor of National Bubble Bath Day earlier this year, Mr. Bubble and
fans raised $10,000 to support Ronald McDonald House Charities-Upper
Midwest. The funds will help provide a warm and comfortable homeaway
from-home to more than 5,000 families who seek specialized care for
their child in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis–Saint Paul, MN) in 2018.

In April, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) hosted a booth
at the USA Science & Engineering Festival at the Walter E.
Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Students
visited a series of stations to learn about the function of several
ingredients found in liquid hand soap. By placing colored sand
into a tube at each station, students experienced what it is like
to “formulate” a product. At the end of the activity, each participant
found out how well their creation would clean if it were
real. They also had an opportunity to speak with ACI scientists.
Designed to inspire the next generation of inventors, creators
and innovators, the Festival is a free expo that allows children of
all ages to participate in thousands of exhibits, experiments and
stage shows. It’s the largest and only national science festival in
the U.S., said ACI, and was developed to inspire youth to seek
out careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
ACI first participated in the event in 2016. Its exhibit supplements
the newly released ACI Exploration Clean website (explorationclean.
org), an online resource for children to learn about
the science behind the formulation of cleaning products.
Packaging manufacturer Amcor recently pledged to develop all of its
packaging to be recyclable or reusable by 2025. At the same time, the
company committed to significantly increasing its use of recycled materials.
The action joins Amcor with 10 brands and retail companies
making the same 2025 commitment, in collaboration with non-profit
the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF). Most of those companies are
Amcor customers.
UK-based EMF’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to a
circular economy, in which resources are used over and over. Packaging
is vital to assuring the safety and effectiveness of an extensive range of
household, personal care, food, beverage, medical and pharmaceutical
products, according to Amcor. It also significantly limits the enormous
environmental implications from food and other product waste. At
the same time, EMF estimates that the companies taking the pledge
together influence more than six-million metric tons of plastic packaging
each year.
Some of the biggest challenges to recyclable and reusable packaging
remain, said Amcor, and will be overcome through leadership and
innovation, in partnership with customers, suppliers, government agencies
and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
With a symbolic First Stone ceremony in March, Beiersdorf
employees and guests of honor celebrated the expansion of its
production facility on a 10,000-square-meter building area in
Bangplee, Thailand. The new production area is slated to be
ready for operation in the summer of 2019 with €50 million
($59.9 million) invested in the site’s expansion. The ceremony
coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Bangplee plant’s
machinery going online for the first time. Since then, the site
has grown steadily, said Beiersdorf. The plant will be certified
according to the LEED Gold Standard (Leadership in Energy
& Environment Design) for environmental construction, with
solar panels on the new roof creating 500 kWh. Spray
