As part of the new recycling initiative HolyGrail 2.0, Berry Global
will manufacture plastic packaging containing Digimarc Barcodes to
facilitate product sorting during recycling. Digimarc will advise Berry
on how to add the digital watermark to containers, either through
the label/sleeve artwork or in the plastic. The Digimarc Barcode
“tags” plastic substrates and print materials and gives identifying information
such as plastic type, product manufacturer, product SKU,
food or non-food usage and multi-layer foil composition.
Additionally, Berry Global announced it will continue to use
SABIC’s polyolefin resins derived from chemical recycling in its
packaging. Berry previously announced it would make all of its packaging
reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. In 2018, SABIC
began the construction of a semi-commercial unit in the Netherlands
to refine and upgrade feedstocks from the recycling of low-quality,
mixed plastic waste. The first collaboration was Berry’s recyclable,
coextruded stand-up pouch containing 30% PCR and sourced from
SABIC’s circular polymer. Spray
