considering the high likelihood of extra profits in a cold
winter.
As with any type of hedging or risk-management, the
details are very important in determining whether an
HDD hedge might be appropriate for you. You would
need to understand the impact of lost HDDs (or lost
gallons) versus budget. You would need clarity on the
costing and settlement mechanisms and would need to
understand whether you are hedging to protect against
a business risk or speculating because you have a gut
feeling on the weather in six months from now.
It so happens that HDD hedges are fairly easy to
understand – either you get paid or you don’t – and
should be considered by all dealers who have bottom
lines that are exposed to annual variations in the
weather. Think it through and speak with someone
who can answer questions for you.
Disclaimer: past results are not necessarily indicative
of future results. The risk of loss in trading commodity
interests can be substantial. You should therefore
carefully consider whether such trading is suitable for
you in light of your financial condition. In considering
whether to trade or to authorize someone else to trade
for you, you should be aware that you could lose all or
substantially all of your investment and may be liable
for amounts well above your initial investment. ICM
