This method can be used on any meter but in most cases with propane it is a multi-meter complex. The steps are: 1. Close the shut-off valve, or gas cock, at the meter inlet and do a walk through the premises based on your company policy. 2. Slowly open the shutoff valve, or gas cock, and then close it after the system has been pressurized. 3. As soon as gas is introduced into the vapor distribution system, wet a small piece of paper and paste it directly over the centerline of the test hand to assist in observing Figure 6. Gas meter with slip of paper marking test dial (step 3) any movement of the hand. This observation should be made with the test hand on the upstroke. Before doing this test make sure any air in the piping system has been purged. 4. Carefully watch the test dial on the meter to determine whether propane is passing through the meter. Depending on the size of the test dial, observation times as follows apply: 5. Look for movement of the test hand for the required length of time according to the test timetable. If no movement happens during that time, you can assume there is no leak. ICM Figure 5. Typical digital gas meter showing test dial 22 ICM/May/June 2016
