Firmenich has opened a new biotechnology and naturals pilot
plant and laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland to quickly develop
ingredients and clean label solutions using digital technology.
The plant provides faster speed-to-market and greater flexibility
for customer collaboration, Firmenich said. It is integrated into
Firmenich’s existing La Plaine, Geneva production site. The pilot
plant can handle multiple projects simultaneously while also enabling
small-scale trial batch production.
Studies have shown that products formulated with nootkatone repel
and kill ticks, mosquitoes and a wide variety of other biting pests.
Companies interested in developing brand-name consumer products
with nootkatone will be required to submit a registration package to
EPA for review, and products could be commercially available as early
as 2022.
The UK’s Environment Agency announced a record 40,653 tonnes
of aluminum packaging were collected and recycled in the second
quarter 2020. This is 52% more than the same period last year. Aluminum
packaging collected through curbside, drop-off and on-the-go
systems in the UK also increased by 37% year-over-year, and tonnage
recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA) nearly doubled. The
Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (ALUPRO) noted
that if recycling rates remain steady, 80% of all aluminum packaging
could be recycled this year.

To help customers design nature-conscious fragrances, Givaudan
has launched the Naturality Platform to identify natural ingredients,
ingredients from renewable sources and biodegradable ingredients.
It incorporates three pillars: consumer study programs about shifting
consumer expectations; the Naturality Guide, which defines new
formulary rules and parameters; and the Naturality Index, which
displays sustainability criteria for each fragrance component.
To inform packaging design, the Sustainable
Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics
(SPICE) has launched the SPICE Tool,
a publicly-available, science-based, ecodesign
tool to measure, calculate and
reduce the environmental footprint of a
cosmetics package across its full lifecycle.
The tool covers 16 environmental indicators,
such as climate change, resource
depletion, water use and biodiversity. SPICE has also released a set
of best-practice materials, including environmental claims guidelines.
The platform has a free Demo version and a Pro version. SPICE was
co-founded by L’Oréal and Quantis and has 25 member companies
and associations. For more info, visit open-spice.com.

solution that can track more than 15 million consumer good
SKUs globally. It can help organizations identify price changes and
discounting activities in real time, create benchmarks against competitors
and inform investment decisions by providing context to an

at category, brand owner, brand and individual product levels.
BASF has launched a web-based 1,4-Dioxane Online Calculator,
which allows personal care formulators to determine the 1,4-Dioxane
content in their formulas. The tool can be accessed from both
desktop and mobile devices and recommends alternative BASF
ingredients to bring the total 1,4-Dioxane value of the formulation
to less than 1ppm, due to a recent law passed in New York. Find the
calculator at carecreations.basf.us/dioxane-calculator.
