Kao Corp.’s Sensory Science Research Laboratory has developed
a perfumery raw materials (PRMs) database as well as a method to
predict the odor intensity of PRM in gas samples. Kao plans to use
this database and method in fragrance products via diffusion or lasting
scent and continue to research methods to decrease greenhouse
gases emitted during fragrance production and transport.
The Household & Commercial Products Association’s (HCPA)
XPAND 2020 Annual Meeting, now set for Dec. 7–11, has been
changed to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has announced that the
SCC 74th Annual Meeting & Showcase, scheduled for Dec. 7–11,
will now be a fully virtual meeting due to concerns and travel restrictions
stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The SCC staff,
along with the Committee on Scientific Affairs, has re-imagined
the conference format to create five full days of cosmetic science
education, packed with two keynote speakers, eight scientific sessions
on the industry’s hottest topics, a virtual poster and showcase floor,

In other news, SCC created the Madam C.J. Walker Scholarship
program to support minority students pursuing an undergraduate
or graduate degree in chemical, physical, medical, pharmaceutical,
biological or related sciences and technology. The two $5,000 scholarships
are funded by Mary Kay Inc.

The in-person American Cleaning Institute (ACI) Industry
Convention has been postponed until January 2022 due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. The week of Jan. 25, 2021 will
now be a members-only ACI Virtual Summit. ACI has
rescheduled its in-person convention for January 2022

Henkel has invested $23 million in its Geneva,
NY and West Hazleton, PA manufacturing sites
to boost production of Dial liquid hand soap
and hand sanitizers. The investment includes
new equipment, a series of improvements and
180 new jobs for the Finger Lakes region. Some
of the new technology installments will be operational
in November; the rest will be up and
running by June 2021, Henkel said.
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has confirmed
the acceptance of Zep Antibacterial
Disinfectant & Cleaner with
Lemon, Zep Spirit II Ready-To-Use
Detergent Disinfectant and Zep All
Purpose Bathroom Disinfectant for
use to protect against COVID-19. The
decision was based on testing that
demonstrated the products kill the
virus on hard non-porous surfaces in
60 seconds.
Malco Products Inc. is investing $1.5 million in its Alliance, Barberton
and Akron, OH facilities to produce a new line of disinfectant
aerosols, spray products and wipes to be sold through car care
distributors. The company will also add 30 employees with a product
launch date set for January. The regulatory-agency approved disinfectant
formulations were created by Stepan Co.
Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors (ICMAD)
has changed its name to the Independent Beauty Association
(IBA). This is part of the organization’s strategy to represent the
independent and entrepreneurial beauty industry and re-brand the
group with a new name, logo and website. The non-profit trade
association has advocated for entrepreneurial, independent beauty
companies since 1974 and is built on four pillars: education, member
service, reasonable legislation and networking. For more info,

Nootkatone, developed by the Centers for Disease Control &
Prevention (CDC) and Evolva, has been registered by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in insecticides and
insect repellents. Nootkatone is widely used in the fragrance industry
due to its characteristic grapefruit scent. It is naturally found in
minute quantities in Alaskan yellow cedar trees and grapefruit skin.
Beiersdorf AG has invested €10 million
($11.8 million) to open a new researchand
innovation center in Shanghai for the
Chinese and emerging Asian skin care
markets. The 83,330 sq ft center has eight
floors and is the company’s second largest
building other than its headquarters in
Hamburg, Germany. It will house approximately
100 employees, have a dedicated
experience center and will also serve as
a co-working space for other innovationrelated
operations and teams. Previously,
Beiersdorf used its R&D facility in
Wuhan, China, for local innovation.
