Summer nostalgia trip…
As someone in denial of time passing, who consistently
thinks that “50 years ago” means World
War One, I was mildly shocked when two press
releases crossed my desk this week concerning 50th anniversary
celebrations of products I remember like they came
out yesterday. One is Malibu Barbie, with toy-maker Mattel
and cosmetics firm ColourPop teaming up to launch a
makeup line “with an array of oranges, pinks and aqua
blue for fun, beach-inspired glam.”
Oooh, the packaging takes me back to
un-air-conditioned summers that lasted about
eight months, when my biggest problem was
ants on my Popsicle. Back then, my Malibu
Barbie doll didn’t lead a glamorous life; rather,
she was lashed to pool toys and endured
violent games such as “Tidal Wave” or “Attack
from The Planet of the Apes.” No Dream
House, pink convertible or West Coast sunsets
for her, just lots of cool nights on the garage
roof or stuck in a basketball net.
Alas, although the ColourPop line offers
“false eyelashes…designed to replicate Barbie’s
doll eyes,” there are no sprays in the collection, so I’ll move on to the next item
celebrating its 50th—Herbal Essences. Now a full line of hair care and styling products,
back in the 1970s it was a groovy-smelling,
forest-green shampoo from Clairol with Earth
Day marketing. My sisters and I used to beg my
mother for Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo—it
just looked and smelled so damned good.
Somewhere along the way Herbal Essence
dropped the “Clairol” (which is now owned by
Wella) and gained an “s” to
become Herbal Essences
from Procter & Gamble. It
also dropped its original
fragrance but gained
a library of almost 30
other scent collections
such as Birch Bark Extract,
White Grapefruit & Mint,
Hemp & Potent Aloe Vera,
Arabica Coffee Fruit, Charcoal and Bourbon
Manuka Honey. Imagine asking your mother
for Hemp, Bourbon or Charcoal shampoo
in 1971? She would have packed you off to
reform school!
Whether gazing ahead or looking back,
we wish SPRAY readers a happy Summer
full of memorable scents and colors…
