Commentary Keeping it Fresh… Every Christmas Eve, my mother would make a special dish that was handed down on my father’s side. The recipe originated in Galicia, in the northwest corner of Spain, and was beloved by all in our family, including the non-Spaniards brought into the clan via marriage, adoption, etc. Everyone loved it…except for me. I won’t get into the name or contents of this edible anathema because it’s too painful a memory, but suffice it to say the recipe included about twenty pounds of Spanish onions. Everyone clamored for this dish, fought over it, stole from others and snuck extras into their car while I sat in the corner with a grimace, eating chocolate Santas and muttering to myself, “Why does every Christmas have to smell so bad?” While the concoction was simmering, endlessly, I would bar myself in my room, put towels under the door to keep the stench out and emerge occasionally to holler down the stairs at my poor mother, “I’m dying, DYING up here!” I have no pleasant memories of nice-smelling Christmases and scoffed at the commercials and TV shows that exalted the “Scents of the Holidays.” So I felt very understood when Febreze launched its “12 Stinks of Christmas” campaign in 2015. Christmas is smelly and Febreze Christmas scents help eliminate those smells. At last. This year, beatboxer Doug E. Fresh and Instagram star @ItsDougThePug are promoting the Procter & Gamble brand with a new music video for the hip-hop remix of Febreze’s second annual “The #12Stinks of Christmas.” The “funky fresh remix” can be viewed on YouTube, while the two Dougs are also featured in a full “The #12Stinks of Christmas” digital campaign including iRadio ads, Snapchat, digital ads and special content on the brand’s social channels. The new holiday scents this year are Fresh-Twist Cranberry and Fresh-Cut Pine and there are even gifts sets that include a Doug the Pug tree ornament (I hope my Secret Santa is reading this). Included in the list of smells are too many casseroles (exactly my feeling), burnt food, piled up dishes and pungent dogs. Will this be an annual promotion for P&G? Who knows, but I personally like the tunes, the pugs and the sentiment. After my mother passed away, nobody made this horrible, overpowering dish again (it was so much work), but everyone in the family talks about reviving the tradition. I encourage them to do so…at their house. I’ll leave a 12 Stinks of Christmas Gift Set on their front porch, ring the bell and run. 6 Spray December 2016 SPRAYTechnology & Marketing Cynthia Hundley Publisher chundley@spraytm.com Ava Caridad Editorial Director acaridad@spraytm.com Christen Harm Assistant Editor charm@spraytm.com Montfort A.
