Thailand hosts Asian Aerosol Federation AAF encourages more countries to form aerosol associations. The Asian Aerosol Federation (AAF) held its second formal meeting in Bangkok, Thailand in May. Delegates from Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand and host country Thailand met to discuss a range of industry issues. They also toured aerosol factories in the surrounding region, including the Thai Daizo Aerosol plant in Chonburi, and met with local Thai Aerosol Association (TAA) members at a cocktail function hosted by new TAA President Yukio Shuda. Asian Aerosol Federation President, Lindsay Showyin of Australia reported that the meeting focused on the harmonization of can performance standards and measurement labeling across the region, as well as a regional awards events timed for April 2014. Addressing the meeting, Showyin noted that as one of the “younger” aerosol associations in the world, the Thai Aerosol Association (established in October 2007) was an inspiration to its peers and he commended its membership for recognizing the benefits which coming together for the good of the industry can deliver. “Perhaps because of this ‘youth’, I see dynamism here in your association, which I also commend you on,” remarked Showyin. “Even a cursory glance at your website reveals a healthy level of events, training workshops and the like.” One goal of the AAF is to encourage the industry in other countries in the region to come together and formally establish aerosol associations. Showyin noted that dialogue was underway with companies in a range of countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea, to gauge the prospects of such development in their respective countries. With the Asian region now accounting for a sizable portion of global fillings and with the rich potential offered by even a modest increase in per capita consumption, Showyin noted that industry associations have an important role in ensuring that safety and environmental standards keep pace with this growth. Regional cooperation is essential to ensure that such standards and legislation are globally harmonized and don’t hinder trade or the sharing of knowledge across national borders. The AAF’s next meeting will be held in Sydney, Australia in April 2014 as part of a week-long series of events. www.aerosolsydney2014.com.
