Classic cars
get a makeover for charity
Remember when you were a kid, and there was that scary teenager on your street
(maybe it was your older brother) who seemed to be out in his driveway spray-painting
his muscle car every other month? He had long hair, a chain on his jeans and a
pack of smokes rolled up in the sleeve of his t-shirt. No matter how many cans of paint used or
layered coats applied, the car always looked like a piece of junk.
Well, things have changed and the restoration of pieces of junk has gone from hobby to obsession
to big business. In this issue, we tackle the aerosol automotive and industrial market (p.
14). We’ve noticed quite a few new products out there for help with restoring and customizing
old hot rods, street rods, muscle cars and other sweet rides. I don’t know much about restoring
cars, but the list of color options is certainly a lot of fun: Panther Pink, Neon Green, Sublime
Green, 50s Aqua, Hemi Orange, Flame Red, Arctic Blue, Desert Sand and many, many more
evocative hues.
The WD-40/SEMA Cares Foose Ford F-150 from 2013
Coincidentally, as we go to press, WD-40 Co. announced it’s teaming up with car builder
The Vaccar Co. on a restoration of an iconic 1966 Ford Bronco (the vehicle’s debut year),
newly equipped with a turbocharged Ford EcoBoost drivetrain.
Continuing WD-40’s eight-year partnership with the Specialty Equipment Market Association
(SEMA), the WD-40/SEMA Cares Boosted Bronco will make its debut at the 2017
SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV on Oct. 31 in the WD-40 booth. The cult classic 1966 Bronco
will be auctioned off in 2018 by SEMA Cares, which will donate the proceeds to Childhelp, an
organization that provides services to abused and neglected children, and the SEMA Memorial
Scholarship Fund, which offers scholarships to students entering the automotive aftermarket.
Since the restored 1966 Bronco hasn’t debuted yet, pictured here is the Ford F-150 auctioned
off by SEMA Cares in 2013. Our educated guess, however, is that this year’s offering
will sport the unmistakable WD-40 blue and yellow.
WD-40 says it has raised more than $800,000 to date for these charities through vehicle
restorations and auctions. It’s encouraging to see such a hobby (or obsession) channeled for
such good.
