The Sea Lion, the elegant sport fishing
boat once owned by Precision Valve Corp.
Founder Bob Abplanalp, sunk Sept. 10
in its slip in the Indian River Lagoon at
the Jensen Beach Docks in Florida during
Hurricane Irma’s storm tide. The boat once
graced the opening segment of the popular
fishing television show “Walker’s Cay
Chronicles.” Abplanalp, who passed away
in 2003, owned the lease to Walker’s Cay
for many years, where he supported sports
fishing as well as conservation.
A consortium of organizations led by secondary packaging company TrakRap has been awarded a grant by Innovate UK to
develop a prototype that could change the way aerosols are packaged and improve industry safety.
The consortium, which comprises logistics firm DHL, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the University
of Bradford, plans to use the grant to build a prototype stretch wrapping packaging machine specifically for use in the aerosol
industry to replace the shrink wrapping systems which are currently used. The proposed prototype eliminates the need for high
temperatures entirely by using a 100% recyclable polymer stretch film. It may also reduce energy requirements by over 90% cent
and reduce the use of plastics by over 60%, offering additional financial and environmental benefits to users.
DHL will provide the production line on which the finished prototype machine will run for several months under
manufacturing conditions, while MTC will model the prototype machine in a virtual factory, allowing the design to be tested
and amended before physical production occurs. The University of Bradford will evaluate the performance and characteristics of
various films to ascertain their suitability for use with the machine.
Unilever Ghana Limited recently launched a social mission campaign dubbed Help a Child Reach Five (HACR5) to deepen
public awareness on the importance of effective hand washing. The campaign, unveiled in the capital city of Accra, is primarily
aimed at reducing the present rate of under-five mortality, which has largely been attributed to preventable diseases such as
cholera and diarrhea. It seeks to encourage the habits of proper hand washing and good sanitation practices among the public,
especially parents, new mothers, health professionals, caregivers and children. Unilever has already taken the campaign to several
schools across the country to teach pupils and teachers the right way to wash hands regularly.
