Heightened awareness surrounding the
dangers of over-exposure to the sun has
led to increased demand for sun protection,
according to market research firm
Euromonitor International. Stemming
from a reported increase of 77% in the diagnosis and
treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers between 1994
and 2014, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation,
consumers are opting to invest in sunscreens that will
effectively prevent damage from harmful UV rays.
Recent advances in sun protection have led to higher SPF ratings,
with ratings as high as SPF100 available across many ranges. However,
Euromonitor indicated that products with a high rating have been shown
to mislead consumers, due to the notion of perceived greater protection;
this also coincides with consumers not applying sufficient product.
Although sun damage is a popular discussion topic, today’s consumers
are still confused and need to be made more aware of potential side effects
of sun damage. In the U.S., 37% of consumers aged 18–24 prefer to
tan naturally versus using sunless tanner; however, among U.S. consumers
who do use sunless tanner, 68% say safety is their reason for usage,
according to market research firm Mintel.
Only 55% of UK consumers have used sunscreen in the past year and
41% aren’t sure what SPF level they should wear in different conditions.
In Spain, 70% of consumers want sun care brands to provide more
education on how to use their products and in China, 38% of consumers
rarely reapply sunscreen throughout the day when they are outdoors.
During In-Cosmetics North America, held in October 2019, Dr. David
Tyrell, Global Skincare Analyst, Beauty & Personal Care, Mintel, hosted
the session “Sun Care Reinvented.” Some sun care trends Tyrell touched
upon were:
• Multifunctional sun care benefits, including products that can
withstand rising temperatures and humidity;
• Products that protect the microbiome by utilizing postbiotics and
prebiotics;
• Products specifically made for tattoo sun protection;
• Unique sunscreen formats, e.g those for the exposed scalp found
in the hair part;
• Genderless sun care;
