A s we go to press, “Spring Cleaning” is full steam
ahead. My mother told me years ago that spring
cleaning is a holdover from the times when
people heated their homes with coal, when coal dust
would slowly coat every surface over the long winter
months, necessitating the whole family getting involved
to scrub down the home’s interior. This made sense,
as my childhood home had a defunct coal room in the
basement, which we used for storage of everything from
my father’s football gear to secret Christmas presents.
However, the latest edition of an antiques collecting
newsletter I subscribe to said spring cleaning is centuries
old and much more necessary than just the desire
for lemon-scented tidiness. Depending on climate and
geography, winter’s end meant the removal of dead
insects and small animals trapped in the fireplace, not
to mention ashes and smoke stains. There was also
intertwined mud, trash, food debris, dirty linen and chamber pot content “from a family
that cooked, ate, slept and used indoor personal hygiene facilities while trapped indoors
by the weather.” Just think of all the aerosol products that would have applied to those conditions.
For the results of the American Cleaning Institute’s National Cleaning Survey and the
latest grime-cutting spray from Mr. Clean, check out page 26.
Sun Care update
In last year’s Sun Care issue, SPRAY
reported on Hawaii’s ban of sunscreens
that contained certain chemicals believed
to be harmful to coral reefs. In 2019, Florida, Mexico
and the Western Pacific nation of Palau have all introduced or
passed legislation banning a number of chemicals for the same
reason. Thinking of reformulating your aerosol sun care product
to correspond to these bans? Don’t miss Corrosion Corner on
page 40, where monthly columnist Dr. Steve Tait discusses how
a change in a sunscreen’s formula may affect the efficacy of its
metal container.
Sun care ingredients are found on page 24, while sun care
formulary is found on page 18 and sun care patents are found
on page 38. Of course, our annual feature highlights not just
the latest and greatest in sunscreen, self-tanning and after-sun
spray products, but also what’s up with the FDA, the ISO, sun
care packaging focusing on ease-of-use and more on chemical
bans.
You’ve got it made in the shade with SPRAY’s 2019 Sun
Care issue….
