Three mega-trends impacting
the aerosol can industry
From sun protection to whipped cream to automotive care
and beyond, metal aerosol cans are utilized by a growing
number of product categories. Beauty and personal care
products accounted for over half of global sales of aerosol cans
in 2017, with deodorants and hair styling agents being by far the
largest applications.
According to Euromonitor International, 9 billion units of aerosol
cans were sold globally in 2017 through retail and the market
is projected to grow by another 1.3 billion units by 2022.*
One of the main drivers for the category’s growth is the rising
adoption of hygiene products in developing countries. Let’s explore
which key trends will impact industries and consumers in the years
to come, therefore influencing the aerosol industry globally.
Trend 1: Experience More
Consumers’ thirst for experience when purchasing products is
increasing. The industry is responding to this demand by creating
products that offer new sensorial experiences. These experiences
allow brands to actively engage consumers—particularly Millennials—
in a deeper, more emotional way.
Personal care products
have even more to offer. An
example of a brand responding
to this trend is Nivea
Silk Mousse by Beiersdorf,
launched in 2018. Shower
mousses are seeing a rise in
popularity in many markets,
as they offer an affordable
and easy way for consumers to
pamper themselves at home.
For many, shower mousse offers
indulgence and recreates

the sensation of a bubble bath
without having to take a bath.
Similarly, Unilever launched
its Instant Shower Mousse across its Dove, Radox and Lynx
brands in 2018. The 2-in-1 products aim to save time spent in
toiletry routines as they are positioned as both a personal cleanser
and shaving mousse.
