the Sun...
May 2019 Spray 15
Sunscreen is no longer only for a day at the beach, it is
now considered by consumers as a critical element of
an anti-aging skin care regime and a must-have skin
cancer preventative.
According to the Household & Commercial Products
Association (HCPA), 54,522,547 sun care aerosol products
were filled in the U.S. in 2017. The majority (54,244,522) were
contained in aluminum cans, with 278,025 being sold in a
steel can.
Emerging economies in Asia Pacific and Latin America are
likely to offer attractive opportunities for growth in the coming
years, said market research firm Transparency Market Research.
Rising disposable income of consumers in these regions,
coupled with their growing awareness of skin care, may support
the expansion of the sun care market there. Spurred by these
factors, the global sun care market is projected to exhibit a compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% between 2016 and
2024. At this pace, the market will progress from $14.8 billion
in 2015 to $24.9 billion in 2024.
Market growth can also be attributed to the booming
demand for more “natural” and organic sun care products and
awareness of increased skin cancer rates around the globe.
To meet the demand for multifunctional benefits and newer
formats, companies are innovating beyond the intrinsic protection
from UVA and UVB rays, according to market research
firm Euromonitor International. Benefits such as moisturizing
and anti-aging have long been present in sun protection, but
newer benefits—including protection from pollution, infrared
light and blue light—are also being added.
Consumers are becoming increasingly ingredient-conscious,
as awareness of the effects of sun care ingredients, such as
oxybenzone and octinoxate (which may harm coral reefs) and
retinyl palmitate (which may be a carcinogen), is resulting in a
rising preference for “natural” and organic ingredients in sun
care, echoed Euromonitor.
Sales through the largest channels in sun care
remain steady. Drugstores/para-pharmacies,
mass merchandisers, hypermarket/
big box store and supermarkets have
maintained strong shares in the
U.S., while channels with traditionally
smaller shares continue
to expand their product offerings
and grow from a small base, said
Euromonitor.
The long, hot summer…
This year’s sunscreen launches have
something for everyone: exotic
botanicals, insect repellent and
minerals, as well as organic and
vegan options. BullFrog Mosquito Coast, for instance, has
been reformulated for 2019. The two-in-one combination sun
protection and DEET-free insect repellent is now oxybenzone-
and octinoxate-free, SPF 50 and provides broad-spectrum
UVA/UVB coverage. Mosquito Coast repels mosquitoes that
may carry Zika, West Nile, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya
viruses for up to eight hours. It contains aloe and vitamin E to
help soothe and moisturize skin. The product does not contain
PABA or paraben and has a pleasant fragrance. There is no
need to wash off Mosquito Coast when returning from the
outdoors.
Also debuting in 2019 is the new BullFrog Mosquito Coast
2.5oz travel size. Both full size and travel size come in cans from
Condensa, with a BOV and actuator from Aptar.
Countersun is Beautycounter’s latest in SPF 30 protection.
The lightweight, water-resistant mineral sunscreen protects
against not only damaging UVA and UVB
rays, but also against blue light—the light
emulating from electronic devices such as
mobile phones, computers and TVs. Countersun
sunscreen uses non-nano zinc oxide,
which are larger particles that have a lower
risk of being inhaled and absorbed into the
skin, according to the company. Additionally,
Beautycounter does not formulate with
oxybenzone and octinoxate—two ingredients
recently deemed unsafe for coral reefs. Sustainably
sourced, antioxidant-rich California
Poppy also helps to provide a shield from the
sun’s harmful rays. The product sprays on
white to assist in application, blends in easily
and dries quickly without an oily residue.
The bag-on-valve actuator system sprays at
any angle.
