U.S. aluminum prices are falling despite a tariff aimed at boosting domestic production of the
metal. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that manufacturers are paying 3% less for aluminum
than they were before the Trump administration announced the proposed tariff on March 1.
These manufacturers said that the 10% tariff on foreign aluminum could push up prices and
cause a domestic aluminum shortage just as their orders pick up in a strong economy.
While a delivery premium applied to aluminum in the U.S. rose more than 40% in the
weeks before the tariff order went into effect on March 23, that surcharge has fallen recently in
anticipation of adequate supplies in the months ahead. Temporary exemptions for many of the
top aluminum-making countries, including Canada, Argentina and Brazil, also have lessened the
squeeze the tariff could put on U.S. aluminum stocks.
“We definitely had a big sigh of relief,” Michael Mapes, Chief Executive of Exal Corp., a
Youngstown, OH-based manufacturer of aluminum aerosol and beverage cans, told WSJ. “Supply
is not an issue right now.”
Inhalant abuse of spray dusters is not covered by Minnesota Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
laws, so lawmakers are now taking steps to change that. According to Minnesota’s KMSP-TV, the
move would broaden the impaired driving law, as the current DWI law uses a U.S. Occupational
Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) list of hazardous agents that does not include spray
duster or a host of other things people can use to get high.
“Not all substances that impair driving are recognized the same under current law. Consequently,
not all impaired drivers are treated the same,” Chief Jeff Tate with the Minnesota Police
Chiefs Association told KMSP-TV.
The bill would change Minnesota DWI laws from a list of specific substances to simply say
“intoxicants.” It is being considered for inclusion in a broader public safety bill.
