Reef Safe
According to The New York Times, recent studies that link the
active ingredients in protecting skin from damaging ultraviolet
rays to coral bleaching has led to a global push for more reefsafe
sunscreens. Chemicals in sunscreen that come off while
swimming or travel through sewage systems when washed off in
the shower contribute to coral reef damage, according to Craig
Downs, the executive director of the Haereticus Environmental
Laboratory, which has studied the effects of sunscreen on coral
reefs.
In 2015, Downs led a team that reported that oxybenzone,
a common chemical found in sunscreens, is toxic to the symbiotic
algae that live within corals, which provides their color
and performs other vital duties, and also stunts the growth of
corals. Researchers agree that sunscreen isn’t the only culprit in
coral bleaching, pointing to rising sea temperatures and other
threats. However, it may be the one travelers have the most immediate
and direct influence over. As a result, “reef-safe” is the
latest trend in sun care, focusing on not only protecting skin
but protecting the environment

Go sunless!
Sunless tanning is a safe way to
get a tan without being exposed to
the sun’s harmful ultra-violet rays.
Sunless tanning products can ensure a fast, even tan, even in winter,
and are now more cost-effective than ever due to their
popularity and convenience. According to market research
firm The NPD Group, nearly 40% ($7 million) of
the $23 million spent on the Canadian Prestige Suncare
category can be attributed to self-tanning products.

Laboratorios, S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Novamex. The
formulation binds oxybenzone—the active ingredient
in most over-the-counter sunscreens—in such a
way so that it does not seep into the skin. Blocking the
absorption of oxybenzone into skin would help resolve
public concern over the use of the compound, which
filters out ultraviolet light and is used in many commercial
topical sunscreens. The American Association
of Dermatology says oxybenzone is safe, but public
concerns have been raised about its effects when
absorbed by users.
