Aluminum aerosol cans continue to succeed… AEROBAL reports significant growth in the aluminum aerosol can market in 2016 Economic and political problems around the world did not have an adverse impact on the performance of the member companies of the International Organization of Aluminum Aerosol Container Manufacturers (AEROBAL) in 2016. AEROBAL once again announced record sales: an increase in year-on-year growth of 3% and production of about 5.5 billion aluminum cans worldwide. Asian markets achieved the highest growth. Even though growth rates were not quite as dynamic as had generally been expected, there was still an impressive increase of almost 10%. North, Central and South America also reported above-average growth; the successful trend in this region continued unabated with increased sales of 5% compared with the previous year. Even the almost-saturated European market was stable and maintained its high production level, despite continuing economic problems in numerous countries in the Eurozone. The deodorant and perfume categories were the primary growth drivers and continue to be very popular worldwide, opening up new growth potential. They accounted for the lion’s share of all aluminum aerosol cans produced in 2016—more than 50%. Other important products and applications in the personal care sector were hair spray, hair mousse and shaving cream. Overall, the personal care sector accounted for about 80% of all aerosol cans produced. Approximately 10% of production went into industrial and household products and 5% into the pharmaceutical sector. AEROBAL’s Secretary General Gregor Spengler was pleased with the record result in 2016 and continues to be optimistic about the future. He sees potential for growth, above all in the Asian markets, pointing out that the per capita consumption of aerosol cans in the 38 Spray May 2017 region is still well below the global average. With regard to products and applications, he sees growing markets for products such as shower foams and dry shampoos, as well as in the broad field of sunscreen products. “I also see clear opportunities for further gains in the pharma sector,” Spengler said. “The outstanding functional properties of aluminum aerosol cans will ensure growth, considering their enhanced product protection and best possible safety. Especially in the medical sector, the aerosol can—with its excellent hygiene standards and precise application—offers benefits that other packaging solutions lack.” Spengler is convinced sustainability and environmental aspects will continue to play a major role in packaging markets, and the aluminum aerosol can is particularly well positioned in that respect. “There is growing recognition worldwide by both customers and consumers that aluminum is an extremely sustainable material that can be infinitely recycled without any loss in quality,” concluded Spengler. “This, in addition to its abundance of functional benefits, makes the aluminium can a valuable and resource-efficient contribution to the future of our planet. The aluminum aerosol can will continue to write its own success story.” Spray
