Regulatory developments and the negative publicity surrounding BPA have heightened the awareness of consumers who are increasingly looking for products that do not contain BPA. In the packaging coatings segment, there has been a great deal of effort by coatings producers to develop Bisphenol A non-intent (BPA-NI) coatings to satisfy consumer preferences and meet regulatory requirements. Coatings for personal care and cosmetic packaging Aerosol cans and aluminum tubes utilize protective coatings and inks to decorate and secure the package from corrosion that could cause leakage or failure. For monobloc aerosol cans and aluminum tubes, coatings are applied inside and out. On the inside, a liner coating protects the package from the product and propellant. On the outside, a clear or colored basecoat is applied. In the case of Monobloc aerosol cans, an overprint varnish is applied to protect the printed design. Coatings are also used on the outside of plastic tubes to protect the printed design. A new generation of products emerge Regardless of what the future holds in terms of BPA usage in coatings, brand owners want safe coatings that meet all regulatory requirements while also performing and protecting with positive aesthetics at a reasonable cost. As one of the world’s largest supplier of monobloc aerosol and tube coatings under our HOBA brand, PPG has played a role in developing BPA-NI coatings. Internal Coatings PPG’s new generation of BPA-NI internal coatings meet regulatory requirements and are approved for use by major brand owners. They are robust and reliable, work with a range of product pH and can be used on various sizes and shapes of aerosol cans and bottles. Options include: HOBA MAX Internal Gold Used for cosmetic, personal care, household, air freshener and insecticide products, the coating is polyvinyl chloride (PVC)- free and BPA-NI. It is single component, resistant to a wide range of products, exhibits good flexibility, and has higher solids formulation and applied cost advantage. HOBA VCL Internal Clear Used for beverage, dairy, cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical products, the coating is PVC-free and BPA-NI. It is single component, resistant to a wide range of products, exhibits enhanced flexibility and application characteristics and is suitable for beverage bottle cans. External basecoats & overprint varnishes PPG’s BPA-NI external coatings and varnishes are solvent and water based; versatile and easy to apply; flexible with high scratch resistance; provide a comprehensive range of special effect coatings and can be used on various sizes and shapes of aerosol cans and bottles. Basecoats are available in white, clear and colored, and overprint varnishes are available in various gloss and matte finishes. These, and other new generation coatings, allow the manufacturer to supply a complete BPA-NI system inside and out for Monobloc aerosol cans and tubes. What Does the Future Hold? For any industry change, extensive development and testing are required, which means large amounts of time and expertise need to be invested by brand owners, can/tube makers and coatings suppliers before these new coatings can be introduced to the market.
