The warmth The sun protection and sunless tanners market in the U.S. struggled from 2013–2014, reflecting cooler than average summer temperatures. However, according to market research firm Mintel, higher than average temperatures during the summers of 2015 and 2016 resulted in sun protection and sunless tanner market gains of 9% as sun exposure was more relevant and top-of-mind. Strong sales also reflected marketing campaigns focusing on the health benefits of using sunscreen, which encourage year-round usage. Sun protection and sunless tanner sales are heavily dependent on average summer temperatures, presenting challenges in forecasting future growth. However, Mintel predicts that interest in products with added skincare benefits and natural offerings, as well as increasing consumer confidence, will result in steady growth, with sales rising 16% from 2016–2021. Campaigns promoting year-round sunscreen usage can also enhance market growth. To further boost sales, brands can target health-focused marketing campaigns toward both men and Black adults, whose lower engagement in the market puts them at risk for skin-related issues, such as melanoma. According to market research firm Euromonitor International, the global Sun Care market in 2015 saw sales of $9.2 billion. The Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) reported that, in the U.S and Puerto Rico, Sun Care products in an aerosol format reached 88,980,511 units in 2015.
