The Western Aerosol Information Bureau (WAIB) was present
to welcome back the California Legislature to the 2020 Session on Jan.
22 at an Open House reception at the California Manufacturers &
Technology Association’s (CMTA) offices in Sacramento. Of particular
concern to WAIB was the California Circular Economy & Pollution
Reduction Act. As a strong advocate of recycling and waste minimization,
WAIB seeks an opportunity to be involved in shaping the legislation.
“For this Legislative Day, it’s about affiliation with like-minded people
and learning from them,” WAIB said in a statement.
“It’s about proactively working to protect our rights and our businesses.
It’s about providing responsible solutions to consumers.
“At the CMTA Open House, we met an extremely diverse mix of people and we learned a good amount. This is why we collaborate,
participate and look for opportunities to influence positive change.”

As much as 90.4% of tinplate steel packaging used in
Germany was recycled in 2018, according to the Society
for Packaging Market Research (Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung
or GVM). In its recently published
annual recycling report for packaging, GVM noted that the
recycling rate from private end use sources was as high as
92.2%. According to GVM, tinplate steel has an important
advantage in that it is almost 100% recyclable and can be
recycled “practically infinitely and without any loss of quality.”
This helps lessen its environmental impact as a result
of the many successive utilization and recycling cycles, the
organization said.

Berry M&H has succeeded in reducing its waste going to
landfills to zero at its Beccles, UK site. The small amount of
waste that cannot be recycled is incinerated and converted to
energy, according to the firm. The company created internal
systems to sort, categorize and store waste streams from the
factory’s multiple packaging operations. There was also an
extensive training program conducted so that all employees
at all levels were engaged in the initiative, as well as consistent
monitoring of all waste streams and internal practices.
A new area was also designed to collate waste streams into
their respective categories. All of this took a little over a year
and the information gleaned is being applied to other Berry
M&H sites across the U.S. and Europe.
