In Memoriam
Youmei Kobayashi, Founder of Japanese
Aerosol Newspaper Co. Ltd., passed away
on March 22 at the age of 84 of pneumonia
unrelated to the COVID-19 virus.
Kobayashi founded the publication at
the age of 31 and served as a Chairman &
Representative Issuer until his death.
The first issue was published on April
1, 1967 with a statement that read, “We
will not go after any particular organization
or company, and we will be neutral with an unbiased editorial
policy.”
According to Tetsuya Motojima, Vice Chief Editor of Japanese
Aerosol Newspaper Co. Ltd., “The Japanese aerosol market was
small at that time, but fortunately Kobayashi got acquainted with
U.S. aerosol product expert Montfort A. Johnsen and others
abroad to develop the newspaper company.”
Beiersdorf has invested an undisclosed
amount in UK-based Salford Valve Co.
Ltd. (Salvalco) through OSCAR&PAUL
Beiersdorf Venture Capital. The collaboration
will help Salvalco commercially launch
its Eco-Valve aerosol valve and support
further research. Salvalco was founded in
2013 and is based on prior research by the
Spray Research Group at Salford University
in the UK. The Eco-Valve technology allows
gases such as nitrogen or fresh air to be used
as propellants in aerosol sprays. Salvalco also provides a range of
valve designs that can be used for different product viscosities and
product types.
“Our partnership with Salvalco provides significant potential
to foster more eco-friendly aerosol innovations—across the global
aerosol category, as well as within the Beiersdorf portfolio,” said
Michael Becker, Head of Global Packaging R&D at Beiersdorf.

The Midwest Aerosol Association (MAA) Board of Directors approved
a $10,000 donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank to
assist in the response to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19
pandemic. The food bank supports more than a half a million
people each year. Families in need have nearly doubled in the region
since the pandemic began, said MAA.
The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) has added
a COVID-19 section to its website at: bama.co.uk/covid.php. This new
section aggregates all relevant government rule and guidelines, as well
as health and safety instructions on how to keep staff safe, minimize
risk and maintain business continuity as far as possible. Current
articles include: testing for essential workers, social distancing in the
workplace, furlough guidance and more.
In other news, BAMA’s annual Innovation Day, previously postponed
until July 7, has been cancelled due to pandemic concerns.
BAMA will instead provide the day’s planned presentations via
Innovation Webinars in the coming months. BAMA’s next Innovation
Day is set for April 21, 2021 at the Royal Armouries, Leeds, UK.
