BASF’s site located in Chattanooga, TN recently achieved 25 years with
zero lost time due to injuries, the longest running record among the
more than 400 members in the manufacturing sector of the Tennessee
Safety & Health Council. BASF achieved this milestone through
a culmination of company, employee and contractor efforts focused on
identifying leading indicators to prevent, reduce and eliminate work related
hazards and unsafe behaviors before they occur. Employees receive
ongoing safety training—90% of them are trained as first responders and
100% of production employees have been trained to respond to plant
and chemical emergencies. Employees have developed and implemented
focused areas of improvement such as Hand Safety, Skin Care Safety,
Personal Protective Equipment Assessments & Upgrades and Machine
Guarding.
“Reaching this milestone shows what a group of people can do if
they all work together to make the workplace safe,” said Steve Hawkins,
Assistant Commissioner of Tennessee Occupational Safety & Health
(TOSHA). “By focusing on leading indicators and integrating workplace
safety into their culture, BASF has produced fabulous results.”

Action Technology’s Clinton, IL facility is commemorating
its 50th anniversary in the same location it started manufacturing
in 1969. The manufacturing facility, which has undergone
three expansions over the past five decades, is known for
its production of tight tolerance plastic dispensing tubing used
in a wide variety of aerosol and liquid dispensing applications,
including personal care, household chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
It operates as a business unit of Tekni-Plex.
“We are proud to have been part of the Clinton community
for the past five decades. Our employees are the reason
for our success,” said Dan Leevey, Plant Manager. “In fact,
more than 25% of our workforce of 67 has been here for
20 or more years, and many in our management team are
employees who have been promoted up through the ranks.”
Tourists may soon be able to save some money and rent bear spray rather than buy it and
discard it before their flight out of Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming. In April, airport
officials issued a solicitation for businesses that would be able to maintain some type of bear
spray rental vending machine or kiosk in the terminal building. A goal of providing such a
service would be to cut down on the 300 to 400 bear spray canisters that are confiscated from
air travelers passing through security checkpoints during a typical summer season, according to
Airport Director Jim Elwood.
“This is a way to put those unused, undamaged cans back into the system and get them
to the next person who might need them,” Elwood said. At least one other airport, Montana’s
Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, offers a similar service due to its proximity to
grizzly territory, where bear spray is a common and recommended safety mechanism. Spray
