EAA President Dennis Smith of Precise Packaging presented “Aerosols: The Greatest Consumer Package,” highlighting aerosol product history, ingenuity and innovation through the decades. June 2017 SPRAY 19 can detect leaking cans on line, in real time, and reject the faulty can instantaneously. It is field upgradeable, requires no calibration and is easily installed on new or existing lines with little or no down time. Anthony Lima, Senior Investigator for the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT), presented U.S. Aerosol Shipping Regulations, explaining the safe shipment of aerosol products. DOT’s Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), said Lima, has been testing packaging for enforcement purposes since 1996. PHMSA works closely with companies to try to ensure safety in shipping of aerosol products without putting the companies out of business. It also offers security training similar to that of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) to, for instance, safeguard chemicals so they are not stolen for terroristic purposes, such as “dirty bombs.” Lima encouraged companies to use a third-party laboratory for safety testing, but if a company wanted to test in its own lab, a safety brochure is available on the PHMSA website: phmsa.dot. gov. Rob Morrow and Howard Ray of Clean Earth, Inc. discussed the firm’s commitment to recycling aerosols. Its custom built Ray (left) and Morrow Lima aerosol recycling plant is capable of recycling over seven million cans per year with the technology to capture and separate the propellant from aerosols for recycling and reblending into fuels that are used to produce electricity and power cement kilns. It processes all types of aerosols, including paints, solvents, adhesives, isocyanates and foams. It can handle 2,000 cans per hour on average while running 24/7. Clean Earth can tackle all waste from an aerosol facility, including shrink wrap, corrugated board, cardboard, pallets, hard plastic caps, steel, aluminum and interior content.
