Curly Qs
Market research firm The Benchmarking Co. found that self-care,
such as using a deep conditioning hair treatment, has risen during
the quarantine. In March, 66% of female poll takers said taking
care of hair and beauty needs reduced stress, which rose to 80% in
May as the lockdown continued.
Following the natural ingredient
trend, Maui Moisture
launched two 8-oz. combing
creams under its Moisture Hair
Care banner. Infused with aloe,
the Maui Moisture Coconut
Milk Combing Cream quenches
dry curls and tames frizz,
detangles hair, and defines curls
without silicones, parabens,
mineral oil, gluten or synthetic
dyes. Other ingredients include
creamy coconut milk and
mango butter that lend a tropical
fragrance to the formula.
Maui Moisture’s Shea Butter
Combing Cream is formulated
to help damaged and dry thick, curly hair with nourishing aloe,
shea butter and coconut and macadamia oils. Also silicone-free,
the combing cream helps frizz die down, detangles hair, enhances
bouncy curls and reduces the appearance of split-ends. It is also
free from parabens, mineral oil, gluten and synthetic dye. The
cream is vegan and fragrant due to the botanical ingredients, the
company said.
Vegan for the win
Vegan formulations are becoming more popular as consumers
look for ways both big and small to reduce their impacts on the
Earth. Mintel noted young adults respond to eco claims as they
question their daily habits. Products that
use less plastic and water, as well as
eco-innovations such as such as
shampoo and conditioner bars
and refillable products, have
strong appeal.
Henkel has launched
the Better Natured hair
care line. The 12 naturallyderived
formulations were
developed by stylists to
deliver professional-level
performance and tested in
a Certified Green Circle
Salon. All products in the line
are free of silicones, parabens,
sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium
laureth sulfate, petrolatum, mineral oil,
phthalates, gluten, animal byproducts, chemical sunscreens, microbeads,
BPA and formaldehyde-releasing agents.
The line includes styling products such as the 50mL Shine
Glaze and 200mL Beachy Texture Spray, as well as the 200mL
treatment product Hydrating Leave-In Milk.
The signature plant blend in each Better Natured formula includes
Tahitian palm, orchid and coconut milks, which also impart
a fruity-floral fragrance. Better Natured products are
packaged in post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyethylene
(PET) plastic. For the product line launch in
April, Better Natured teamed up with Keep America
Beautiful, Stamford Hospital Foundation, Project
Donate Beauty and TerraCycle for a free container
recycling initiative. See p. 31 for more on TerraCycle.
Sustainable solutions
Euromonitor noted the idea of “sustainability” has
evolved beyond environmental concerns to a more
holistic approach that aims to create social, environmental
and economic value. Additionally, the majority
of adults agree “made with sustainable ingredients” is
an important product claim when selecting hair care
products, Mintel said.
The revamped Fekkai haircare brand debuted in
March with a deliberate focus on the line’s environmental
impact. Fekkai products deliver salon-level
results with plant-derived ingredients and are housed
