Spray Patterns AVA CARIDAD Editorial Director The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) has published the 5th and latest edition of The Warehousing of Aerosols: A BAMA Guide to Safe Storage. It covers the general requirements for safe storage, regulations, safety issues, control of hazards and the safe disposal of aerosols. The key changes in this edition are amended guidance notes on the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) regulations following changes in 2015 that introduced a new hazard category—“flammable aerosols.” The Guide also contains new Annexes that highlight many changes in regulations. The publication is free for members and £100 ($140) for non-members. In addition, advice on retail storage of aerosols is available, free of charge, from BAMA in a separate publication: Guide to Retail Storage & Display of Aerosols. For copies of either of these Guides, email enquiries@bama.co.uk. In the Philippines, The EcoWaste Coalition warned the public against buying and using household insect killers and sticky rodent traps that have not undergone official safety and efficacy evaluation. EcoWaste issued the warning made by the Philippines Food & Drugs Administration (FDA) in May after the group found 10 aerosol insecticides and 11 mouse and rat glue traps—unregistered and “made in China”—that are sold by retailers in the capital of Manila. “Smuggled ‘made in China’ aerosol insect killers and adhesive rat traps are all over the bargain streets and malls in Manila,” said Thony Dizon, EcoWaste Coalition’s Project Protect Coordinator. “Consumers are lured into buying these contraband products because of their affordability, attractive packaging and claims of being non-toxic and safe. Consumers should be cautious in patronizing these products as they have not undergone the required registration with the FDA,” Dizon said. The FDA warned that the products have not been evaluated by them to ensure their safety and efficacy and may be harmful, toxic and pose imminent danger to human and animal health. Counterfeit products may have fewer active ingredients than the original version or they may contain low quality or possibly more toxic active ingredients. Croda International Plc recently held a groundbreaking ceremony at its Chocques manufacturing site in northern France that signals the start of a major capital investment. The focus of the project is a new production facility that will increase capacity at the site by more than 20% when it becomes fully operational in early 2017. The extra volume will allow Croda to meet increasing demand, improve the flexibility of production across the site and increase support to European customers in a wide range of industries including personal care, health care, crop care, specialty lubricants and polymers. During this groundbreaking event, new utilities infrastructure at the site was also officially opened. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently named the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) a winner of its 2016 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award. Eight member companies of the trade association were also recognized as Partners of the Year by the Safer Choice Program. The Safer Choice Program is aimed at identifying alternative chemistries and chemicals for use in consumer and institutional products through a labeling initiative. The program is now working with 500 partner organizations and has qualified more than 2,000 institutional and consumer products—with a broad range of cleaning home care and custodial uses—to use the Safer Choice label. 54 Spray July 2016 The world’s only Flying Eye Hospital—which takes doctors around the world to treat patients with curable blindness—has been repainted with support from AkzoNobel.
