nation. To support facility compliance, Inspectors perform various activities, ranging from inspections to outreach activities. Inspectors visit chemical facilities to ensure the adequacy of SSPs and that, once approved by DHS, facilities are implementing these plans. They are available to assist facilities and answer any questions regarding the development of an SSP and the CFATS regulation as a whole. To request a Compliance Assistance Visit with an inspector, please visit www.dhs.gov/cfats-request-compliance-assistance visit for more information. To date, more than 3,000 chemical facilities have been deemed high-risk and are regulated by the CFATS program. The SSPs these facilities have developed and implemented represent tens of thousands of security measures—ranging from background checks, physical barriers and even training programs—that have greatly enhanced the security posture of the U.S.’s high-risk chemical facilities. This is an exciting time for the CFATS Program, as DHS ushers in the next phases of a maturing regulatory program and continues to conduct compliance inspections at facilities with approved plans. Efforts are ongoing to build upon the foundation of the CFATS program, including work on the next generation of the CFATS regulation. We continue to review all aspects of the program for improvement and anticipate issuing a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for comment later this year. To learn more about the CFATS program as well as chemical facility security in general, we encourage readers to participate in the upcoming annual Chemical Sector Security Summit taking place July 19-21, 2016 in Alexandria, VA. The Summit is an industrywide networking and educational event co-sponsored each year by DHS and the Chemical Sector Coordinating Council. This summer marks the 10th anniversary of the event, and includes a webinar option for those that will not be able to attend in person. For more information about the Summit or to register to attend, please visit www.dhs.gov/chemical-sectorsecurity summit for more information. Beyond the Summit, DHS also provides free, voluntary resources—including best practice guides, training videos and exercises—for first responders, municipalities and facilities that are exempt or otherwise not covered by CFATS. To access this information, please visit the Chemical Sector–Specific Agency Page at www.dhs.gov/chemical-sector-resources. DHS is committed to providing CFATS resources, tools and opportunities for facilities with chemicals. Email questions to CFATS@hq.dhs.gov or to contact an inspector, visit www.dhs.gov/chemicalsecurity for more information about the CFATS program and chemical security.
