APEAL joins Virtuous
Circles Workshop in
Romania
APEAL recently joined the European
Commission’s Virtuous Circle
workshop in Romania in December. The
Virtuous Circle is an
initiative launched by
the European Commission
(EC) to help
those Member States
believed to be at risk
of missing the 2020
target for recycling 50%
of municipal waste as
identified in the EC’s
report, published Sept.
24, 2018.
Hosted by Grațiela Leocadia
Gavrilescu, Romanian
Deputy Prime
Minister & Minister of
Environment, the workshop
was designed to
examine issues integral
to increasing recycling
rates and providing
support through technical assistance and
sharing of best practices.
Alexis Van Maercke, secretary general of
APEAL, said: “By 2025, new waste legislation
will apply including more ambitious
recycling targets. However, it is fundamental
that the targets under the current
legislation are met first. We therefore
welcome the recently-launched Virtuous
Circle Workshops jointly organized by
the Commission and the Member States.
As APEAL, we are dedicated to supporting
these initiatives.”
increasing consumer knowledge
about recycling, including
the importance of emptying
steel aerosol dispensers before
disposal.
Nevertheless, as we move
towards a circular economy, steel
as a packaging material serves as
a true success story.
The latest recycling rate for
steel for packaging, including tinplate
aerosols, is 79.5%—close to
the industry’s self-imposed target
for 2020. Far from relaxing our efforts, though, we are pushing to increase
the recycling rate even further, for example by participating in initiatives such
as MetalMatters in the UK, which educates householders about metal packaging
recycling and motivates them to recycle more at home.
It is an exciting time for steel aerosol packaging, with innovations making
packaging lighter, ever more environmentally-friendly and offering the consumer
more convenience.
At the Aerosol & Dispensing Forum in Paris last year, Colep demonstrated
how recent trends in light-weighting mean steel aerosols can now be 22%
lighter than previous generations of cans. Ardagh Group achieved a wall thickness
of only 0.13mm for its 250mL Schwarzkopf Drei Wetter Taft aerosol can.
This dimension allows for a 15% saving in materials and water.
There are also growing opportunities for aerosol brands to make their mark
on the shelf. Steel is a formable and incredibly versatile material, and a range
of innovative printing, finishing and shaping techniques have been developed.
The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to design, and this,
combined with the enhanced benefits it offers in terms of sustainability, makes
steel a desirable packaging material of choice for aerosols.
Brexit Update
Patrick Heskins, Chief Executive, British Aerosol Manufacturers
Association (BAMA)
Few industries in Britain have proved so robust and buoyant than the aerosols
sector. Indeed, the successes and growth of the industry, including its
impressive sustainability record, are documented in the publication, Aerosols in
Figures, available free of charge at www.bama.co.uk.
In general, manufacturers continue to innovate in all areas from propellants
to packaging formats, designing for recyclability and light-weighting packaging
while remaining focused on product safety and introducing new environment
friendly formats such as the compact aerosol.
Meanwhile, as negotiations between
the UK Government and the European
Commission for the UK to leave the European
Union continue, Brexit remains at
the forefront of many business’ minds.
Certainly, it remains hard to discern
what the ultimate impact will be and
while we know that trade negotiations cannot start until the “divorce settlement”
has been agreed, there are many pieces of legislation where the possible
changes that result will affect the aerosol industry to a greater or lesser degree.
However, BAMA continues to influence legislators and regulators on behalf of
the aerosol industry in the UK and Europe. Through maintaining and improving
the current network of contacts in various UK institutions and building stronger
relationships in Europe, BAMA will give an even stronger voice to the UK aerosol
industry.
As we go to press, there are four possible outcomes for Britain and its relationship
with the EU:
