Procedure:
Begin charging hot (160°F–185°F or 71°C–85°C) deionized water to the batch
tank. When the water covers the bottom of the agitator, turn on the mixer
and begin adding the xanthan gum to the water stream through a tri-blender.
Maintain temperature between 160°F and 185°F (71°C and 85°C). Continue
mixing for a minimum of 30 minutes while adding the remainder of the hot
water. Inspect the batch for lumps. If they are not present, continue to the next
step. If lumps are present, continue mixing until the lumps are gone (i.e. the
xanthan gum is fully dissolved). Add the boric acid and mix a minimum of 15
minutes. Inspect for lumps or un-dissolved boric acid. If they are not present,
continue to the next step. If lumps are present, continue mixing until the lumps
are gone (i.e. boric acid is fully dissolved). Add Bio-Soft N25-9 with mixing.
Add Stepanol EHS with mixing. Add propylene glycol with mixing. Mix batch
for 10 minutes while maintaining temperature between 160°F and 185°F (71°C
and 85°C). Sample batch for pH. pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5. If pH is
below 6.5, adjust into range with 50% sodium hydroxide. If pH is above 7.5,
adjust into range with hydrochloric acid. Cool batch to 105°F (40°C) or below.
Add fragrance with mixing. Add preservative with mixing. Add deionized water
as needed with mixing. Re-check pH. If pH is below 6.5, adjust into range with
50% sodium hydroxide. If pH is above 7.5, adjust into range with hydrochloric
acid.
