SPRAY asked leading fragrance suppliers about upcoming
scent trends for Household Care. Here’s what they had to say:
“Arylessence recently completed its 2020 forecast for household
fragrance and product trends.
We expect the wellness focus to be a key driver into 2020
and we know it’s here to stay. Consumer expectations for
products that speak to them from a holistic standpoint will
continue to grow.
Look for an increase in essential oil label claims and natureinspired
concept names that reflect mindfulness, wellness
and aromatherapeutic benefits. These products will win with
every consumer demographic and especially resonate with
Millennial and Gen Z shoppers.
Implied simplicity with elements of luxury is another
emerging trend. Think along the lines of “less is more.”
Fine-fragrance complexity has made its way into the household
arena and will gain momentum. Pair a complex oriental,
fougere or floriental accord with a singular concept like
wood, fern or blossom or utilize a tried-and-true clean citrus,
embellished with a sparkling peel note and crushed green
herbal accents to create a concept such as “Zest for Life.” This
trend-forward citrus blend represents the evolution of your
must-have citrus scent within a household product line.
In household, clean-smelling olfactive directions will always
be of prime importance, however the concept of “clean”
is expanding. We’re incorporating gourmand infusions of
vanilla bean, tonka and praline within our floral, ozone and
aldehydic citrus accords to inspire and intrigue the household
shopper with new interpretations of clean that will win into
2020 and beyond.”

“Household fragrances widely convey efficacy through
traditional cues such as citrus and aromatic notes by offering
an air of freshness to deliver on consumers’ core expectations
for functional performance. However, in order to modernize
these classic, clean directions and promote new dimensions
of efficacy, dewy greens and fruity nuances are added to
heighten sensoriality during the cleaning experience. More
recently, we’ve seen brands disrupt category codes and push
the boundaries of experiential fragrances by incorporating
tropical, coconut notes into household cleaning products—a
move that clearly demonstrates the need to address consumers’
desires for performance and pleasure.”
