Increasing popularity of personal care and cosmetics products such as hair sprays, deodorants and shaving creams among young populations is likely to drive the demand. The increasing geriatric population is also expected to positively influence demand for anti-ageing products, particularly in U.S., Europe and Japan. Increasing infrastructure spending in emerging economies such as China, Indonesia and India is likely to drive its demand for spray paint applications. Favorable support from regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected, according to the report, as aerosols don’t contribute to global warming. The EU Commission Working Group on Cosmetics has voted in favor of approving zinc oxide as a UV filter in cosmetics in Europe. Industry sources stated that formally approving new options to achieve effective UVA and UVB protection is a major milestone for formulators of UV protection products who will now have a wider choice of globally approved UV filters to meet consumers’ needs. Following the vote on Oct. 22, zinc oxide in both its nano and non-nano form will be suitable for use as a UV filter, with official entry into Annex VI of the EU Cosmetics Regulation expected from early 2016. Givaudan recently laid the foundation for a new flavors manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon, Pune, India. This is Givaudan’s largest investment in India since 1998. The new site, which is expected to open in 2018, is expected to employ around 100 people and will complement Givaudan’s existing flavor manufacturing facility in Daman, India. Marking its 120th anniversary, Firmenich announced the creation of two “Next Generation” Firmenich programs to advance basic Research in the areas of Neurosciences and Sustainability. Firmenich established endowed initiatives at Stanford University in the U.S. and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. The endowed Firmenich Next Generation Faculty Fund at Stanford supports successive earlycareer faculty members working in either the field of sensory neurosciences or sustainability, to assist them in pursuing research and/or clinical work. The Firmenich Next Generation Chair at EPFL will enable the school to recruit a professor in neurosciences to strengthen EPFL’s Geneva Campus-based ecosystem. Mergers & Acquisitions Aiming to become more of a fullservice provider, Airopack Technology Group has recently acquired Proficos, Airopack’s partner for bulk making, filling, sleeving, labeling and packing Airopack dispensers. With this acquisition, all of these activities are now fully in-house and are being further integrated. Coty Inc. will pay about $1 billion for the beauty care unit of Brazil’s Hypermarcas SA, enhancing distribution in one of the world’s largest consumer markets ahead of the completion of a similar deal with Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G). Coty indicated the Hypermarcas purchase would provide a platform to distribute P&G products in Brazil, where demand for U.S.-made cosmetics is growing rapidly. In July, Coty agreed to pay P&G $12.5 billion for 43 brands to expand beyond perfumes. Under Bart Becht, who was tapped as Coty’s CEO in June, Coty is trying to appeal to younger consumers, shifting to areas such as celebrity perfumes and cosmetics. The acquisition requires Brazilian regulatory approval. Drugstore chain Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. announced that it would acquire smaller drugstore chain Rite Aid Corp. for $9.4 billion to widen its footprint in the U.S. and negotiate for lower drug costs. The deal, worth $17.2 billion including acquired debt, will increase the footprint of Walgreens, the largest U.S. drugstore chain, by half. It will also help fend off rivals from Wal-Mart, Amazon. com Inc. and online pharmacies. A Walgreens-Rite Aid deal would need approval from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, but Walgreens said it expects the transaction to close in the second half of 2016 and sees cost savings of more than $1 billion from buying Rite-Aid, which will initially operate under its existing brand name. Global specialty chemical manufacturer Hallstar announced that it has acquired Fortinbrás, a specialty chemical manufacturer based in São Paulo, Brazil. The acquisition helps increase Hallstar’s presence in the fast-growing market of Brazil and the greater Latin American region. Hallstar and Fortinbrás have broad product offerings for the beauty, personal care and industrial markets, along with specialized formulations capabilities and technical support.
