Personal Care Ingredients Alban Muller Padinami is a 100% natural extract of Padina Pavonica, a brown algae from the Mediterranean Sea, according to Alban Muller. It helps restore skin elasticity, moisturizes for a firmer skin, stimulates natural synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and collagen and helps improve cell communication. Protectami, also made with Padina Pavonica, helps improve skin resistance and cell communication for an optimized skin metabolism. It helps protect the skin, especially from pollution. Ashland A growing global trend toward urban lifestyles and city living is leading to an increasing concern about the effects of atmospheric pollution that may adhere to the skin, with particulate matter penetrating to induce skin sensitivity and accelerate the visible signs of aging with collagen breakdown, skin discoloration and skin barrier compromise. Results from a recent double-blind clinical study, conducted by Ashland’s Consumer Science team in Shanghai, China, indicate Elixiance Biofunctional, rich in polyphenols quercitrin and miquelianin, can provide skin protection benefits following 70 days of exposure in an urban environment with high levels of air pollution. BASF Lys’Sun from BASF helps repair imbalances caused by sunlight and restores the production of functional elastic fibers to help skin regain a youthful appearance. Flamenco Summit Aqua is natural mica with a blue shade that offers intense brightness and magnifies the range of possibilities in skin care and make-up applications. Croda Cithrol 10GTIS from Croda International Plc now offers high performance removal of particulate matter to help facilitate pollution protection. Particle matter in urban areas deposits on the skin, which can lead to a general unclean feeling and a perception of both blocked pores and increased sensitization. According to Croda, Cithrol 10GTIS has already been proven to be an effective mild surfactant, allowing for the formulation of advanced facial oil cleansers that have benefits for sensitive skin, luxurious sensory characteristics and easy rinsability. To meet the need for pollution protection cleansing, Croda has recently carried out extensive in-vitro pollution cleansing tests on a Cithrol 10GTIS-based oil cleanser against different market leading benchmark formulations. In each test, the oil cleanser containing Cithrol 10GTIS outperformed all benchmark and control formulations, effectively removing significantly more particulate matter after rinsing. DSM DSM has developed a comprehensive approach to protect skin against the effects of environmental stressors, which the company is calling “Five Actives–Five Actions.” The approach has built on recent scientific advances to determine how the company’s leading actives can be applied to improve skin comfort, protection, color, quality and perfection. The actives include Alpaflor Edelweiss, Pepha-Tight, Pepha- Protect, Regu-Fade and Preregen PF. For the “Five Actives–Five Actions” approach, new in-vitro studies were conducted on the pollutants urban dust (PM 2.5 & PM 10), benz(a)pyrene (a pollutant found in industrial combustion processes, car exhausts and cigarette smoke) and ozone. Focus parameters were oxidative damage, skin barrier disruption, cell viability reduction, inflammation induction and epigenetic modulation. Results showed that the “Five Actives–Five Actions” approach helps to increase cell viability, reduce inflammation markers IL-8 and PGE2, modulate epigenetic marker microRNA and reduce DNA damage. Evonik Evonik has developed sample formulations for seven personal care products for tattooed skin. These nurture the skin before and after the tattooing process so that the tattoo looks good over the long term and there are no unpleasant aftereffects. The formulations contain active ingredients such as Sphingokine NP, Skinmimics and SK-Influx V, as well as mild surfactants, emollients and emulsifiers from Evonik. Tattoo Preparatory Lotion, intended to moisturize the skin adequately before tattooing, has active ingredients including Sphingokine, Skinmimics and Tegosoft DEC. It tautens the skin, stimulates regeneration of the epidermis and helps ensure a pleasant, non-oily skin feel. In the W/O Recovery Soft Cream sample formulation, SK-Influx V is combined with Tegosoft OER as the skin care ingredient and Abil EM 180 as an emulsifier for highgrade water-oil emulsions to help restore the skin’s protective barrier after tattooing. In Evonik’s Daily O/W Body Lotion SPF 15 for Vibrant Colors formulation, Tegosoft DEC increases the solubility of UV filters to help prevent colors from fading. For daily skin care, the lotion also contains the moisturizing emulsifier Tego Care PBS 6 and Tego Natural Betaine, which helps the skin retain moisture. Evonik’s Tattoo Care concept also includes solutions for a shower gel for gentle cleansing, a skin-care stick, a tattoo sharpening roller to lend greater luminosity to skin and pigments and a camouflage make-up for temporary concealment of tattoos. Galderma Galderma announced that it has received U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval of two new products for the treatment of nasolabial folds (NLF), or “laugh lines,” in patients over the age of 21. Restylane Refyne was approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and Restylane Defyne for the treatment of moderate to severe, deep facial wrinkles and folds. They are manufactured with XpresHAn Technology, creating gels that offer a range of flexibility and support for varied patient needs. Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne have been shown to maintain effectiveness for the treatment of laugh lines for up to 12 months.
